Tigers cruise by Pomeroys into RSC Final

Georgetown flexed its muscle in the River States Conference semifinals, needing just 1 hour, 21 minutes rout Saint Mary of the Woods, 3-0, and move on to the championship match on Saturday.

The Pomeroys scored the first 2 points of the opening set and then watched Georgetown go on a 6-0 run to take command. Finn Heinemann racked up 4 aces in the run and forced SMWC to burn an early timeout. The move paid off as the Pomeroys scored 4 of 5 to cut Georgetown's lead to 7-6. Michal Bak then delivered back-to-back kills to jump start a 7-1 run as the Tigers pulled away for a 14-7 lead. Saint Mary climbed back within 6 at 16-10. Georgetown's offense took back over with 4 straight kills for a 10-point lead. Kristjan Unt ended the set moments later as the Tigers took the opener, 25-17.

The 2nd set started nearly identical to the 1st. Saint Mary scored the first 2 points and then saw Georgetown score 10 of the next 12 to take a 10-4 lead. The Pomeroys got 1 back but the Tigers kept charging as 3 more pushed the lead to 13-5. A run of 4 straight soon followed for an 18-6 lead. Saint Mary made a late push, but it proved no more than window dressing as Georgetown cruised to the win, 25-14.

Georgetown's only early run came with the Tigers down 4-3. A run of 3 straight points were all on Pomeroy errors, but it was enough to give the Tigers the lead for good. 2 Robin Puss kills later gave the Tigers a 13-9 lead. the Pomeroys fought back with 4 of 5 to get within 1. Michal Bak then came up big with a kill and tandem block that started a 6-1 run to give Georgetown a 20-14 lead. With the lead at 22-16, Kristjan Unt delivered consecutive kills to give Georgetown 8 match points. They needed only one as Finn Heinemann smashed his 5th ace of the day to close out the set, 25-16, and send the Tigers to the final.

Heinemann finished the day with 38 assists and 12 digs to go with the serving excellence. Kristjan Unt hit .476 on the outside to finish with a team-high 12 kills. Ben Meyers paced the back line with 14 digs as part of a defense that held Saint Mary to a .133 hitting clip. Georgetown goes for the RSC title on Saturday against 2-seed Campbellsville. First serve from Great Crossing HS is set for 2:00pm.
