Helwig scores 1st career goal in 2-2 draw

Freshman Midfielder Annie Helwig scored her 1st collegiate goal in the 52nd minute as Georgetown came away with a 2-2 draw at IU Columbus to extend the team's unbeaten streak to 9 straight to start the season. It also marks the team's 5th tie in those 9 matches.

Georgetown's offense struggled on Saturday against Asbury with Bekah Clark on the sidelines. Clark's return tonight let loose an offensive onslaught from the Tigers as they launched 7 tries in the 1st 13 minutes, setting a tone that lasted all night long. The shots kept coming in the half and the 13th proved lucky as Laura Beumala found the net off a pass from Bekah Clark to give Georgetown a 1-0 lead. The score stayed the same through halftime as Georgetown could not find more despite a 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. Daysia Thompson stopped all 3 shots she faced in the half before being relieved by Olivia York for the 2nd half.

Both defenses tightened up to start the 2nd half. In the 52nd minute, Georgetown's 2nd shot of the half came off the foot of Annie Helwig. The shot had more than enough to find the net for a 2-goal lead. Helwig nearly had a 2nd goal in the 66th minute but just missed wide right.

IU Columbus got a stellar keeping performance from Mallory Gilley, who finished the night with 14 saves. She was rewarded with offensive help in the 82nd and 85th minutes as the Crimson Pride were able to get 2 by Olivia York to tie the game at 2. Each keeper made 1 more save over the final 5 minutes, leading to the 2-2 result.

In total, Georgetown held a shot advantage of 28-7 over the Crimson Pride, including 16-6 on goal.

The Tigers come home on Friday to kickoff Mid-South Conference play as they take on Cumberland (TN). Kickoff from Toyota Stadium is set for Noon.
