Tigers' unbeaten streak reaches 7

Georgetown continued its longest unbeaten streak to start a season in more than 15 years on Thursday afternoon. After falling behind early against Midway, the Tigers kicked into another gear and pulled away for a 4-1 win to push the unbeaten run to 7 straight.

The Tigers were tested early in the game as Midway came out firing. Daysia Thompson had to make a save within the first minute and another in the 5th. The Eagles pressure stayed on and was rewarded with a goal in the 8th minute for an early Midway lead. From there, the Tigers' defense clamped down as Midway did not record another shot attempt until the final minute of the half.

The same could not be said for Georgetown. In the 19th minute, Laura Beumala flew into the top of the Midway box and off a feed from Bekah Clark, Beumala chipped a clever ball off the outside of her left foot, which carried so much side spin that the Midway keeper had no chance. The tally  leveled the match with Beumala netting her 3rd goal of the season. Beumala nearly had a second goal in the 26th minute but was turned away. After assisting on the tying goal, Bekah Clark once again scored the eventual game-winner on a tight shot near the end line in the 34th minute off a feed from Annie Helwig. The tally put the Tigers ahead for good at 2-1. Less than 5 minutes later, Noreen Grier took possession at center back and lofted a 40-yard pass onto the foot of Kendyl Rumple, who buried her 2nd goal of the season to push the Georgetown edge to 3-1 going into halftime.

Both teams continued firing on goal in the 2nd half. The final 45 minutes saw a combined 20 shot attempts from the teams (12-8, Midway). A critical moment came in the 55th minute when Bekah Clark was shown a red card for arguing a foul call on a tackle attempt. The card forced the Tigers to play with 10. The ensuing free kick on goal was snared by Daysia Thompson to keep the game a 2-goal lead for Georgetown. The Tigers nearly added to the lead in the 66th minute. Mallary Bailey broke open against a single defender and had 3 shots on goal in a matter of 10 seconds. 2 were stopped by the keeper with the 3rd being blocked by the Eagles' recovering defense. Bailey would not be denied as less than 3 minutes later, Noreen Grier found another passing lane, this time to Bailey, who got behind the Midway high defensive line. Bailey streaked down the left side and fired a goal into the opposite side for a 4-1 lead.

Midway's tried to answer back in the 72nd minute, but Daysia Thompson was there to record her 7th and final save of the day. Soon after, she was lifted for Olivia York in goal. With the player advantage, Midway had to keep charging and did, but York was there each time. The Tiger keeper tallied 4 saves over the final 17 minutes to keep the margin 4-1 at the final whistle.

Noreen Grier's 2 assists were the first points of her collegiate career. Bekah Clark's goal and assist extended her point streak to 3 straight games. She leads the team with 9 total points (4 goals, 1 assist). Daysia Thompson's 7 saves marked the 4th time this season she's stopped at least that many.

The Tigers return home on Saturday night to take on Asbury. Kickoff at Toyota Stadium is set for 7:00pm.
