Bekah Clark calms Red Storm with game-winner
Georgetown renewed an old rivalry against Rio Grande at Toyota Stadium on Wednesday night. In a match that saw the teams combined for 29 total shots, it was Bekah Clark's flick in the 47th minute that was the only one to hit the back of the net in a 1-0 Tiger win.
The chances took time to develop on the night. Each keeper only had to make a single stop in the first 27 minutes. Laura Beumala had 2 chances in the 28th minute. The first was saved while the second sailed over the crossbar. Each team had just 1 more shot attempt later in the half but neither were on target as a quiet first half went scoreless.
Georgetown's breakthrough came on a counter-attack in the 47th minute. Kendyl Rumple moved the ball into the forward half and found Bekah Clark on the right side of the Rio box. Clark eyed the target and chipped a shot over the Red Storm keeper's mitt for her 2nd goal of 2024 to put Georgetown on the board. The Tigers used the momentum to push for more. Kali Settle took a strike in the 56th minute from 20 yards out. The ball beat the keeper but sailed high enough to ping off the crossbar and stay out of the goal. Rumple and Clark each tried again minutes later but to no avail. Laura Beumala nearly had a goal in the 67th minute, but the shot hit the post and was cleared away just before crossing the line. The Red Storm had a number of chances in the 2nd half as well, but each one on target was turned away by Daysia Thompson, including a close shot in the 89th minute.
Thompson finished another clean sheet with 4 saves. She'll look to keep the momentum going on Friday afternoon as Georgetown welcomes West Virginia Tech. Kickoff from Toyota Stadium is scheduled for 3:00pm.
