Thompson's clean sheet keeps Tigers unbeaten
An early goal was all Daysia Thompson needed on Sunday as the Tigers' keeper turned in another virtuoso performance in a 1-0 win at Lawrence Tech.
Georgetown had the 1st opportunity of the match in the 3rd minute as Bekah Clark nearly had a quick one but was denied by the Blue Devils' keeper. The Tigers kept charging, and it paid off in the 9th minute as Kendyl Rumple found the back of the net to put the Tigers on the board.
The Tigers put the rest on the shoulders of Daysia Thompson. After Rumple's goal, the Tigers managed just 1 more shot on target the rest of the day. Thompson went to work as she turned 3 shots away from the 15th to the 19th minutes to keep the Blue Devils off the board. Georgetown's defense in front of Thompson settled in and did not allow another shot on goal for the rest of the half to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead at the break.
In the 2nd half, Lawrence Tech kept charging. Thompson's first save of the half came in the 55th minute. She faced a penalty kick just 2 minutes later, but the attempt sailed wide despite Thompson's excellent coverage on the try. 2 more saves came just 70 seconds apart in the 59th and 60th minutes. Lawrence Tech threatened again in the 74th minute but were denied again. The Blue Devils had 2 more chances at an equalizer in the 83rd minute and with just 50 seconds to go, but Thompson again was up to the task to seal the win.
Daysia Thompson finished the day with 8 saves, marking the 3rd straight outing she's tallied at least 7 stops to keep Georgetown unbeaten through 4 matches.
The reigning Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week will lead the Tigers back home on Wednesday night against Rio Grande. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm at Toyota Stadium.
