Tigers eliminated in AAC Semifinals
After an historic win over Montreat in the opening round of the AAC Tournament on Friday, Georgetown had to quickly shift gears and prepare for a semifinal showdown against Cumberlands on the Patriots' home turf. The Tigers fought hard but could not overcome the numbers game. Georgetown had just 10 players available, ultimately leading Cumberlands towards a methodical 18-9 win to eliminate the Tigers from the tournament.
Cumberlands raced out to an early lead as the Patriots scored the first 3 goals of the game. Aubree Lair got Georgetown on the board with 6:39 to go in the 1st. Cumberlands struck back with the next 2 for a 5-1 win with less than 2 minutes on the clock. The Tigers then took advantage of Patriot fouls as Hannah Voss and Madison Diaz scored on free-position shots in a span of 35 seconds to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 1:10 left. Cumberlands countered with 2 goals in the final 39 seconds to take a 7-3 lead after 1.
The Patriots' D then clamped down on Georgetown's record-breaking offense in the 2nd. The Tigers mustered a lone goal from Madison Diaz with 7:54 to play until halftime. Cumberlands put 4 more on the board in the period to take an 11-4 lead to halftime.
Georgetown's offense again found space tough to find in the 3rd, again finding the net just once as Katerina Gilbert scored with 2:07 to play. Georgetown's defense tightened up as well, holding the Patriots to 3 in the quarter, but still enough for a 14-5 lead over Georgetown going to the 4th.
The Patriots started the 4th with 3 straight for a 17-5 lead. Gilbert got Georgetown's first tally with 5:25 to go. GC got 2 more in a row from Diaz and Lair to cut the deficit back to 9 with 2:25 to play in the game. Gilbert scored once more with 22 seconds left for the final result.
Madison Diaz and Katerina Gilbert each finished with a hat trick in the loss. Aubree Lair and Hannah Voss combined for the other 3 goals. Madison Haney finished with 10 saves to surpass the 500 career save plateau (509).
Georgetown will now pin its hopes on an at-large bid to the NAIA Tournament. The announcement of the field comes on Tuesday at Noon.
