Diaz leads Tigers to 3rd straight AAC romp

Madison Diaz scored 6 times and assisted on 4 others as Georgetown cruised by Tennessee Wesleyan, 19-5, on Wednesday to improve to 3-0 in the AAC.

Diaz's first point of the day came on a free position goal with 11:38 to play in the 1st. It gave GC a 2-0 lead after Katerina Gilbert scored just 65 seconds into the game. Diaz then assisted on the next 2 goals. The first was to Gilbert at the 10:08 mark, and the second was to Melanie Wieland with 8:14 remaining for a 4-0 lead. Aubree Lair made it 5-0 with 6:41 to play. Diaz came back with another score off a free position shot to make it 6 unanswered. Hannah Voss scored twice in the final 3:45 to give the Tigers an 8-1 lead after 1.

Voss and Diaz each scored off assists by Gilbert to start the 2nd quarter. Diaz repaid the favor with an assist on an Aubree Lair goal to give Georgetown an 11-1 lead with 8:30 to play until halftime. Tennessee Wesleyan got 1 back, but Georgetown countered with the final 2 of the half. Katerina Gilbert and Melanie Wieland found the net again to propel the Tigers to a 13-2 halftime lead.

The 3rd quarter scoring started with another Madison Diaz free position goal at the 11:55 mark. Melanie Wieland scored twice in the quarter to continue her strong run as of late. Diaz assisted on a Hannah Voss goal early in the 4th and later scored twice more to cap her big day.

Diaz needed just 7 shots on goal to put 6 on the board for the Tigers in her 10-point day. She also had 4 ground balls and caused 2 turnovers. Hannah Voss and Melanie Wieland each tallied 4 goals and 2 ground balls in the win. Katerina Gilbert continued her scoring run with 3 more goals and 3 more assists. Gilbert now has 43 goals and 33 assists on the season. Madison Haney stopped 4 shots in goal to pickup the win.

Georgetown now gets set for its 2 toughest AAC games of the season. The first comes on Saturday when Reinhardt comes to Toyota Stadium. The opening draw is set for 1:00pm.
