Diaz leads record-setting win over UHSP

After a successful trip to Florida, Georgetown Lacrosse returned home on Wednesday night to take on the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP). Georgetown dominated from start to finish on both ends. The team set a new program record. Madison Diaz tied another. It all added up to an 18-5 win, the Tigers' 5th in 6 games.

After a slow first 3 minutes, Georgetown broke through with the opener as Katerina Gilbert scored off a feed from Hannah Voss. At the 9:13 mark, Aubree Lair made it 2-0 off a pass from Madison Diaz. Gilbert made it 3-0 thanks to Diaz with 8:31 to play in the first quarter. Melanie Wieland made it 4-0 with 7:39 to play, and the Lair-Diaz connection met up just 23 seconds later for a 5-goal lead. Georgetown went on to take a 9-2 lead after 1, with Madison Diaz assisting on 4 of the 9 goals.

The junior midfielder took her turn at the net just 41 seconds into the 2nd quarter to give the Tigers a 10-2 lead. With 11:19 to go, Seshadri Pratama beat the UHSP goalie to make it a 12-3 Tiger lead. Aubree Lair got another with 3:51 on a woman-up chance for a 10-goal margin. UHSP got one back with 16 seconds to go, thus making Georgetown's halftime lead, 13-4.

The 2nd half saw a number of turnovers on both sides, thus limiting the scoring chances. The first goal of the 3rd quarter did not come until 4:58 to play when Katerina Gilbert fired a shot home from Aubree Lair to establish the 10-goal lead and start the running clock. Georgetown added 2 more to end the 3rd to take a 16-4 lead to the 4th, and go on to the 18-6 win.

Madison Diaz tied Avery Blackmon's school record with 8 assists in the win. Diaz also scored twice with 7 draw controls. The defense set a new school record with 21 caused turnovers. Avery McAlister led the effort as she forced 5 of the 21. UHSP committed 39 total turnovers for the game.

Katerina Gilbert scored 5 more goals with an assist. Through 11 games, she sits on 36 goals and 30 assists (66 points). She also tallied 6 draw controls in the win. Aubree Lair put 5 goals on the board with 3 caused turnovers. As a team, Georgetown needed just 22 shots on goal to put 18 on the board.

The Tigers head back into AAC play on Saturday with a trip to Cleveland, Georgia to take on Truett McConnell. The opening draw is set for 1:00pm.
