Lacrosse comes up short at Siena Heights
Georgetown took on Siena Heights in Michigan on Sunday as a makeup for the original game at Toyota Stadium that was canceled due to weather. The Saints started strong, but Georgetown's defense turned up the 2nd half pressure and nearly pulled off a rally. Siena Heights held on for a 12-10 win.
Siena Heights came out firing with 2 goals in the first 53 seconds to take the early lead. Georgetown settled in and eventually came back as Lindsey Maynard and Hannah Voss found the net to tie the game with 8:10 to play in the 1st. Siena Heights followed with 2 goals in 51 seconds to retake the lead. Katerina Gilbert got 1 back on a free position shot with 5:28 to go. The teams exchanged goals until the horn sounded with Siena Heights leading, 6-4, after 1.
Gilbert brought Georgetown back within 1 with another goal at the 12:41 mark of the 2nd. From there, the quarter belonged to the Saints. Georgetown managed just 2 more shots the rest of the quarter, while Siena Heights scored 5 unanswered to surge into an 11-5 halftime lead.
Defense became the story in the 3rd as neither team had much in the way of scoring chances. Katerina Gilbert scored for Georgetown with 13:46 to go. Siena Heights got that goal back at the 12:04 mark. Hannah Voss tallied the final goal of the quarter with 9:34 to play, giving Siena Heights a 12-7 lead going to the 4th.
Melanie Wieland got another goal back for Georgetown with 11:23 to play in the 4th. Katerina Gilbert scored again just 55 seconds to bring the Tigers within 3 at 12-9. The momentum forced the Saints to call a timeout to regroup. Gilbert pulled another goal back with 5:48 to go to get Georgetown within 2. She nearly had another with 1:31 to go but was denied at the doorstep. Madison Diaz took a final shot with 41 seconds to play but was also turned away as Siena Heights escaped with the win.
Katerina Gilbert scored 5 goals for the 3rd time in 4 games to keep the Tigers within reach. She also added 2 assists and 2 ground balls. Madison Haney stopped 9 shots in net.
Georgetown returns home on Tuesday to take on the Pilots of Bethel (IN). The opening draw from Toyota Stadium is set for 5:00pm.
