Haney breaks own saves record in opening loss

Georgetown Lacrosse kicked off the 2025 season on Friday at Toyota Stadium against St. Thomas. The Tigers had to play a person short due to injury, and despite a record 24 saves from Madison Haney, Georgetown fell to the Bobcats, 9-6.

St. Thomas broke through with a goal just over 3 minutes into the game with quick passing around the Georgetown goal. The Tigers and Bobcats each had chances on goal after the opener but were all denied until the 3:13 mark when St. Thomas found the net again for a 2-0 lead. Georgetown was able to get 1 back as Madison Diaz fired a free position shot home with 40 seconds left in the quarter.

Madison Haney stopped 2 early chances for the Bobcats inside the first 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter. Georgetown was then able to go up a player as St. Thomas was called for a yellow card. With 11:25 to play, Diaz scored another from a free position to tie the game at 2. St. Thomas was able to reclaim the lead at the 8:25 mark following a foul by Madison Haney that placed her behind the goal on a free position. Georgetown came back less than 3 minutes later as Aubree Lair tied the game off a free position and following a green card with 5:36 left in the quarter. The teams had limited chances from there with neither finding the net, thus sending the game to halftime tied at 3.

St. Thomas struck early in the 3rd. With 13:30 to play, Madison Haney made a save from close range but could not corral the rebound as the Bobcats picked the ball up and tucked it past Haney to retake the lead, 4-3. Both goalies and defenses tightened up from there as neither side was able to find a ball home the remainder of the quarter.

St. Thomas went quickly in the 4th and got its first shot away just 19 seconds in, but Madison Haney was there to deny the tally. The Bobcats then took advantage of a failed clearance and were able to score with 13:22 to go for a 5-3 lead. The 2-goal deficit was shortlived as Madison Diaz scored again off a free position just 9 seconds later. St. Thomas countered with another goal at the 12:35 mark for a 6-4 lead. Aubree Lair brought the Tigers back within 1 with 12:06 left off a cross pass from Katerina Gilbert. The Tigers kept fighting and with 9:42 to go, Gilbert was on the scoring end of a pass from Lair as the tandem hooked up over the middle to tie the game, 6-6. Shortly after a Georgetown draw control, the Tigers turned the ball over near midfield. St. Thomas took advantage on the fast break and scored the go-ahead goal with 8:56 left. The Bobcats looked for another just 44 seconds later, but Madison Haney denied a free position chance to keep Georgetown within 1. St. Thomas later scored off a saved shot with 6:37 to go for an 8-6 lead. The Bobcats got one more tally with less than a minute to play for the final result.

Madison Haney's 24-save night broke her own record of 20 set late last season. Madison Diaz led the offense with 3 goals and 5 draw controls. Aubree Lair finished with 2 goals and an assist. Katerina Gilbert ended with a goal, assist and 3 draw controls.
