Tigers fight hard against CU
Georgetown showed itself well in the latest Tiger fight against rival Campbellsville, but came up a bit short as Campbellsville came into Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Saturday and left with a 71-64 win.
Georgetown (7-5, 4-3) made it clear from the start this game with #3 Campbellsville (9-0, 7-0) would be different than matchups from the recent past. Cassie Colon led the early charge with 6 points in the 1st quarter as GC shot 50% in the period to lead CU, 18-17 after 1. Campbellsville would not have its first lead of the game until nearly 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter at 24-22. With the game tied at 24, Campbellsville went on a 7-2 run to take a 5-point lead, but a bucket from Erin Toller brought GC back within a possession and started a 7-0 Georgetown run to send the orange & black back in the lead at 33-31 with just over 2 minutes to go in the half. A 3-pointer from CU's Maddy Boyle would give Campbellsville a 34-33 lead at halftime.
After an early 3rd quarter basket from Izzy Lamparty, Boyle would hit another 3, triggering a 10-2 Campbellsville run and giving the visitors a 44-37 lead midway through the quarter. The lead would eventually grow to 10 at 49-39 late in the 3rd before Georgetown scored 12 points over the final 3:04 to trim the margin to 5 at 56-51 heading to the 4th. An early 3-point play from Campbellsville's Kaitlynn Wilks pushed the lead back to 8 and put Georgetown in the danger zone. GC fought back though and over a 5-minute stretch went on an 11-3 run. With 4:33 to go, Jordan Rogers hit a midrange jumper to tie the affair at 62. CU turned to Wilks yet again as she hit an inside bucket and 2 free throws to put CU back up by 4 with under 2 minutes left. Izzy Lamparty got GC back within 66-64 with just over 90 seconds left, but the Tigers would get no closer. A CU basket, followed by a missed GC shot inside and a turnover proved to be Georgetown's undoing as Campbellsville hit enough free throws down the stretch for the 7-point win.
Georgetown was led in scoring by Jalynn Landversicht, who put in 13 points in 25 minutes off the bench. All 10 Tigers who played in the game got into the scoring column. The big difference in the game proved to be points off turnovers as GC was outscored 13-2 in that area.
The Tigers next travel to Tennessee starting on Thursday against Cumberland before heading to UT-Southern next Saturday.
