Rannells' 1st career HR leads to 7th straight win

Rannells' 1st career HR leads to 7th straight win

After a 3-hit outing in game 1 against Thomas More, Georgetown knew it had plenty left in the tank in trying to sweep the doubleheader. The tank was emptied as Cassie Rannells launched her 1st career homerun, and drove in 4 runs as the Tigers swept the doubleheader with a 10-5 win in game 2.

The Tigers and Saints exchanged runs in the top of the 1st. Thomas More would add another in the top of the 2nd to take a 2-1 lead before the Tiger bats roared to life. Ashley Shelton led off the 2nd with a single to left and immediately stole second. Destiny Wallace followed with a walk, putting 2 speedsters on for Maria Fratangelo. The lefty doubled to center, scoring Shelton and putting Wallace at 3rd. Kaylyn Barnett then singled to short as the defender chose to come home with the throw. Wallace was ruled safe at the plate, while Fratangelo went to 3rd and Barnett took 2nd, putting GC up 3-2. Stevie Shepherd brought home Fratangelo with a sac fly that also sent Fratangelo to 3rd. After Mallory Myers walked and stole second, Sarah Claxon singled to right, scoring Barnett. Cassie Rannells got her big day started with a single to follow, scoring Myers and giving GC a 6-2 lead after 2.

Thomas More would draw closer in the 3rd, hitting 2 solo home runs off Emma Cummings to get within 6-4. The Tigers would get the runs back in the bottom of the 4th. Myers reached via a single and stole 2nd. Rannells stepped up and roped a single down the right field line, scoring Myers, and putting GC up 7-4. Peyton Beger then got in on the fun with a double to deep right center that sent Rannells motoring home all the way from 1st, putting the lead back at 4.

In the top of the 5th, Thomas More got a leadoff single, before Emma Cummings settled in. She induced a popup for the first out and followed that with a 6-4-3 double play to slam the door on a Saints rally in the inning. The Saints would scrape a run across in the 6th to get within 8-5. Georgetown's offense was not to be denied on this day. Sarah Claxon stepped up to bat and caught a break as a foul ball was dropped, giving Claxon new life. She took advantage by doubling to left center. It set the stage for Cassie Rannells. A cut fastball came middle-in and Rannells smashed the ball over the fence in right for her 1st career homerun, leaving no doubt on this game and sealing the Tigers sweep.

Rannells finished the day 3-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. 6 Tigers recorded multiple hits as the team banged out 15 hits against the Saints.

Georgetown now carries a 7-game winning streak into the weekend when they travel to Campbellsville. The 1st of a 3-game set will take place on Friday at 3:00pm.
