Tigers move to 2-0 in RSC

After a quick win on Friday night over Rio Grande, Georgetown looked for its 2nd River States win in as many days as Oakland City came to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The Tigers got what they came for as a balanced offense that hit .415 was too much for the Mighty Oaks to handle. Georgetown won in straight sets to improve to 7-2 on the year.

Kristjan Unt started the 1st set with a block at the net that set the tone for how this day went. Georgetown sprinted out to a 5-1 lead. Jose Acuna Yepes then followed with back-to-back kills to keep the lead. Yepes finished the day with 10 kills and hit .562. Georgetown slowly built the lead as the set went on. Oakland City burned a timeout after an Adam Szewinski block put the Tigers ahead, 15-7. The Tiger lead reached as high as 10 in the set before a 25-17 win.

Oakland City bounced back and kept the 2nd set tight. The teams split the first 14 points, but Oakland City then scored 3 straight to give the Tigers their first sign of trouble. Georgetown stay poised and with a combined effort on both sides of the ball, the Tigers scored 8 of 10 to take a 15-12 lead over the Mighty Oaks. With an 18-15 lead, an ace from Yepes and kill from Kristjan Unt gave Georgetown a 20-16 edge. OCU scored the next 2, but kills from Unt and Szewinski pushed the GC lead right back to 4 at 22-18. Szewinski soon followed with a kill and block to give Georgetown 5 set points. The Tigers won the 2nd set, 25-20, to go up 2-0 in the match.

The momentum carried into the 3rd as Georgetown raced out to a 4-0 lead. The Tigers played most of the set with a lead of 4-6 points as Oakland City struggled to get close. The Mighty Oaks called a timeout down 19-14, looking for a surge to extend the match. They got 3 straight out of the timeout to get within 2. Robin Puss then delivered a kill for a 20-17 Tiger lead. A Georgetown serve error, followed by an Oakland City serve ace brought the Mighty Oaks within 1 at 20-19. Adam Szewinski was called upon once more and the sophomore delivered with a kill up the middle. Jose Acuna Yepes followed with one of his own to build the lead back to 3 at 22-19. After an OCU point, Miguel Ariza Vega had his turn up the middle with another kill. Yepes and Vega put the punctuation on the sweep with 2 final kills in a 25-21 third set win.

The Tigers had a dominant offensive day, hitting .415 with just 9 attacking errors. Kristjan Unt led the way with 12 kills. Jose Acuna Yepes and Robin Puss each had 10, while Miguel Ariza Vega and Adam Szewinski combined for 14 kills in the middle. Finn Heinemann masterfully paced the offense with 37 assists to go with 8 digs. Ben Meyers paced the back line with 11 digs.
