No. 13 Tigers Complete Season Sweep of Patriots
GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The 13th ranked Georgetown College men's basketball team has been on a tear in the month of January. The Tigers have dropped only one game in the month, and dating back to December, they have won 10 of their last 11 games.
That includes a comfortable 81-60 win on Saturday, Jan. 29 over University of the Cumberlands (13-9, 7-7 MSC), which was coming off a double overtime loss at Campbellsville.
Georgetown (18-3, 11-3 MSC) took advantage of a Cumberlands (13-9, 7-7 MSC) squad that entered the game off of a double-overtime loss at Campbellsville, and the Tigers cruised to the 81-60 victory.
Cumberlands opened the game on a 9-2 run, but the adrenaline quickly wore off and Georgetown (18-3, 11-3 MSC) took over. The Tigers answered with an 11-2 run, and after a single bucket, they added nine more points in a row, bringing the totality of the stretch to 20-4 for a 22-13 lead. As the half drew to a close, the Tigers added two more 7-0 spurts to lead 41-24 at the break.
Drew Lamont scored two minutes into the second half to push the Tigers' lead to 20, but Cumberlands managed one final run. The Patriots closed the gap to eight points with 7:45 to play, but Georgetown kept the margin from getting any closer.
Kyran Jones once again posted a double-double - his 11th of the season - with 21 points and 13 rebounds, and three other Tigers joined him in double-figures. Jaquay Wales tallied a dozen, Michael Turay had 11, and Jayrese Williams notched 10 in the game. Derrin Boyd missed out on double figures, but not by much as he had eight points, eight rebounds, and a team-best five assists in the contest.
Georgetown was 33-for-70 (47.1%) from the field in the game, but it had a slow shooting night from deep, as it shot 5-for-21 (23.8%) from beyond the arc. At the foul line, the Tigers were 10-for-12 (83.3%). The Tigers out-rebounded the Patriots 42-31, and turned 17 UC turnovers into 20 points in the game.
The Tigers will wrap up the month of January on Monday night when they take on the Life University Runnin' Eagles (5-14, 2-12 MSC). Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. Eastern.
