Grenadiers too much for Tigers
For the final time in 2024, Georgetown played a non-conference match at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The Tigers took on IU Southeast in a match that was back-and-forth for most, but ultimately went the way of the Grenadiers, 3-1.
The opening set proved one to forget for Georgetown as errors haunted for its entirety. The Tigers committed 11 attack errors in the set and hit .-129 en route to a 25-13 loss to fall behind.
The Tiger offense turned things around in the 2nd set, hitting an impressive .324. The Grenadiers were not far behind at .270, which is what led to a tight battle for the set. The teams split the first 20 points of the set before IU Southeast went on a mini-run to take a 13-11 edge. Georgetown countered with 3 of the next 4 to level the set at 14. With the set tied at 19, Maria Tarazona delivered a blistering ace and combined with a Makena Walker block, Georgetown took a 21-19 lead and would not give it up. The Grenadiers got back within a point 3 times but could not draw level. The set saw 12 ties in total but Georgetown took it, 25-23, to level the match.
The 3rd set carried a similar early story as the 2nd as the teams once again found themselves tied at 10. With a 13-12 Grenadiers lead, Georgetown went on a 5-2 run punctuated by kills from Constanca Rosas and Makena Walker to send the Tigers to a 17-15 lead and the Grenadiers to a timeout. IUS countered with 3 straight out of the timeout for a 1-point lead. Georgetown slowly moved back ahead, 19-18, but the Grenadiers cleared space with 5 straight points for a 23-19 lead. Georgetown fought back to hold off 2 set points but couldn't do it a 3rd time as the Grenadiers squeaked out a 25-23 win to go up 2-1 in the match.
The Tigers came roaring to start the 4th set and took the first 5 points to force the Grenadiers into an early timeout. The move paid off as IUS came storming back on a 10-2 run to take a 10-7 lead and force Georgetown to call for time. It would prove to be a run that Georgetown could never fully recover from. The Grenadiers were able to maintain a small lead all the way to a 20-17 edge. From there, IUS scored the last 5 points of the set to take it, 25-17, and win the night, 3 sets to 1.
Gareth Bruce and Giara Ferrari combined for 24 kills up front. Ana Darr and Makena Walker were right behind with 9 apiece. Viannie Kazan and Faith Miller combined for 35 assists. Maria Tarazona tallied 5 aces, 5 assists and 12 digs.
Georgetown will again be out of conference play on Friday night as the Tigers travel north to take on Ohio Christian for the 2nd time this season. OCU won the first match, 3-2, on September 12th. First serve for the rematch is set for 7:00pm.
