Tigers eliminate Freed-Hardeman in MSC Opener
Georgetown took the floor in Bowling Green against Freed-Hardeman to open the Mid-South Conference tournament. Having beaten the Lions in the regular season, the Tigers showed an aggressive, confident streak and knocked off FHU in 4 sets to advance to the MSC Quarterfinals.
Georgetown (7-19) came out aggressive early, not allowing Freed-Hardeman (16-15) to find offensive rhythm. The Tigers gave up only 8 kills in the 1st set, whereas Georgetown was in double-digits in kills every set of the match. The Tigers took the opening set, 25-20.
GC used the set break to fine tune its offense and it clicked on all cylinders in the 2nd. 16 kills and only 5 errors allowed the Tigers to comfortably take set 2, 25-18, as FHU continued to struggle offensively. The Lions hit below .100 in the set.
FHU was able to take set 3 from Georgetown, 25-20, as errors cost Georgetown in the set. 13 Tiger miscues allowed the Lions to stay in the match despite less than 10 kills in the set.
Another set break came and this time Georgetown had enough. The Tigers dominated set 4 defensively, giving up just 6 FHU kills, while putting away 11 on the GC side. The 4th set score ended 25-12 but was never that close. The Tigers closed out when they needed to in order to advance.
Hunter Keller and Gareth Bruce combined for 28 kills, just 3 shy of the Freed-Hardeman team total. The 1-2 setting punch of Viannie Kazan and Ivona Zarin were magic moving the ball. The duo combined for 38 assists. The backline pairing of Alea Ohle and Reese Speed were key factors in the Tigers defensive effort, combining for 30 digs.
Georgetown advances to the MSC Quarterfinals to take on top-seed Campbellsville at 4:00pm today.
