Tigers push Doane to 5 sets

Georgetown looked to close out the 5-match run in the Chick-fil-A Classic at Keiser University on a winning note before heading home. Lady luck proved not to be on the Tigers side as the team came up short in another 5-set match. Doane was able to make enough plays over the final 2 sets to pick up the win.

This Tiger fight between Doane (1-3) and Georgetown (0-5) was tight from the start. Doane needed extra points, but ultimately took the 1st set, 28-26. Georgetown found strong efficiency in the 2nd set, commiting just 3 errors, while forcing Doane into 9 attack errors of its own. GC also hit a team-high .312 in the 2nd set as they cruised to a 25-14 win to level the match at a set apiece.

Set 3 proved to be a carbon copy of set 1. Both teams played strong offensively and defensively. Neither side hit above .160 in the set. The third needed extra points once more. This time it was Georgetown coming out on top, 26-24, to move ahead 2-1 in the match.

The set break between 3 and 4 proved to be the turning point in the match. Doane took its game to another level in set 4. Doane built a lead early and were never seriously threatened in the set. Ultimately, Doane had 13 kills and only 1 error in the set while hitting .364 en route to a 25-13 set win, leveling the match and sending it to the 5th.

Unfortunately for Georgetown, the momentum Doane built in the 4th carried through the 5th as they committed just 1 error in the 5th set while building a .538 hitting percentage. Doane took the 5th set 15-7 and thus the match.

For Georgetown, Hunter Keller capped an impressive week in Florida as she turned out 17 kills in this match, while hitting .500. She also chipped in a solo block and 3 assisted blocks. Kayla Mantell and Viannie Kazan kept the ball moving for the Tigers offensively. Mantell finished with 23 assists, while Kazan tallied 20 helpers.

Georgetown now returns home for nearly 2 weeks before heading to Cleveland, GA to compete in the Truett-McConnell Invitational starting on September 2nd.
