Early goals cost Tigers against #4 Cumberlands

The Cumberlands Patriots lived up to their #4 NAIA ranking against Georgetown on Wednesday night. Two goals in the first 11 minutes put Georgetown at a deficit that couldn't be recovered from as Cumberlands knocked off Georgetown, 4-0, in Williamsburg.

Georgetown (3-4-1, 0-2-0) faced an early onslaught of offense from Cumberlands (7-0-3, 2-0-1) and were unable to respond in kind. The Patriots form was strong from the get go, putting 12 shots on Tigers keeper, Madison Lonneman, in the 1st half. While Lonneman held her own, the overall strength of Cumberlands was on display. The Patriots found the net in the 9th and 11th minutes to take the early 2-0 lead.

The Tigers settled in for a nice stretch through the midway point of the half, but the Patriots found a lane in the 23rd minute, when Jayden Boelter scored her 2nd straight goal on the night, to give Cumberlands a 3-0 lead. That goal margin would grow to 4 in the 31st minute for Cumberlands, which end up the final result.

Madison Lonneman and Daysia Thompson split time in net once more for the Tigers. Lonneman played the first 45 minutes, making 8 saves. Thompson took the 2nd half and stopped all 3 shots faced as Cumberlands pulled its attack back to focus on defense. The defensive prowess showed as Georgetown was only able to muster 3 shots on goal the entire night, compared to 15 for the Patriots.

The Tigers now turn their focus to Pikeville on Saturday, October 1st. It is homecoming weekend at Georgetown College and will also serve as Senior Night for the Tigers. The action starts at 5:00pm at Toyota Stadium.
