Competitive spirit drives Tigers to 4-0 victory

Georgetown College women's soccer took shots early and often in the team's home opener Tuesday night. It paid off in a 4-0 win over Cincinnati Christian University.

The Tigers (2-0) got to play everyone dressing against the Eagles (1-2).

"It's fantastic to get so many players in the game and not see a change in tempo," said GC coach Leah Crews Castleman. "I'm also pleased to get four different players into the scoring action – they are understanding their roles and doing what we ask of them."

The Zimmer sisters hooked up to get the game rolling. Max Zimmer, junior defender, hit a long ball to Skye Zimmer, freshman forward, who made a one touch flick over the charging goalie. The ball bounced into the net and it was 1-0 Georgetown.

In the 37th minute Emily Conner finished a Max Zimmer pass for breathing room and all the scoring in the first half.

"I thought the young ones stepped up and really battled to prove they have what it takes and that's the kind of competitive environment we are trying to foster," Castleman said.

The fire and drive continued in front of the home crowd as Skye Zimmer forced the action early in the second half. She was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Senior Ariel Howell calmly netted the passing shot low for a 3-0 advantage.

Jodi DeJohn netted her second goal of the season in the 55th minute. She took a pass from Elise McKinney, one-touched it around the defense and scored for a 4-0 win.

Danielle Lang, Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, earned her second shutout of the season and eighth in her career.

"It's important in games like this to stay mentally strong and focus on maintaining good defense to preserve the shutout," said GC assistant coach Kayla King.

Georgetown returns to action this weekend in a tournament in Indiana and is back at home 7 pm Monday against Midway University.
