Lacrosse breaks program records in win over TMU
Georgetown entered the 2023 AAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament with high confidence on a 4-game win streak. One of those wins came over Truett-McConnell, a team the Tigers beat 21-3 during the streak. Georgetown took its play to an even higher level in this one as they set a new program record for points (43) and assists (16), and tied a record with 27 goals as they advance to the AAC semifinals with a 27-3 win.
Maddie Brock came firing early, setting a tone that TMU could not answer. Brock scored 4 goals in the first 4:56 of the 1st quarter. She would add one more later in the frame and alongside 2 goals from Katerina Gilbert and 1 from Faith Boa, the Tigers led 8-2 going to the 2nd.
The offense kept coming in the 2nd quarter but the defense stepped up even more as GC did not give up a goal in the quarter. Maggie Byrd got in on the scoring twice in the 2nd as did Faith Boa. Gilbert, Aubree Lair and Madison Diaz also found the net, giving Georgetown a 15-2 halftime lead, which carried a running clock into the 3rd.
The running clock did little to slow the Tigers offensive onslaught. If anything it lit a fire under the team, particularly Katerina Gilbert, who turned the 3rd into a personal arcade with 5 goals. Georgetown outscored Truett-McConnell 8-0 in the quarter to take a 23-2 lead to the 4th.
TMU got a goal early in the 3rd to snap an 18-0 Georgetown run, dating back to the first quarter. Gilbert would score once more in the 4th and add assists on goals by Maggie Byrd and Kara Brill. Maddie Brock would tally the final score of the record-breaking day.
Not lost on anyone on the day was Faith Boa's 4 goals, pushing her career total over 100 and into the top-5 of program history. Madison Diaz set a new program record with 14 ground balls, breaking the previous mark of 11.
Katerina Gilbert's career day ending with a staggering 9 goals and 4 assists. Maddie Brock scored 6 times and assisted on another. Maggie Byrd also tallied a hat trick, while Aubree Lair finished with 2 goals and 3 assists.
The Tigers dominated in all facets. GC was +21 in ground balls, +14 in draw controls +12 in turnover margin and went 19-19 on clearing attempts.
Georgetown will next take on 2-seed Reinhardt in the AAC Semifinals on Friday at 4:00pm.
