Lacrosse scratches out Senior Day win
On a sunny and extremely windy day in Georgetown, the Tigers honored 9 seniors who are leaving a lasting mark on the program and college. They responded to the crowd in kind with a 13-12 win over AAC foe, Montreat, sending the Tigers to 5-2 in league play.
Georgetown came roaring out of the gates to a big, early lead. Aubree Lair set the tone by scoring just 12 seconds into the game. After a tying goal from Montreat, the Tigers would get 3 straight goals from Madison Diaz, Lair, and Katerina Gilbert, to take a 4-1 lead with just over 3 minutes left in the 1st. Melanie Wieland and Jessi Vazzana would score in the final 2 minutes, giving the Tigers a 6-2 lead after 1.
Aubree Lair continued her knack for scoring early as she did it again in the 2nd. This goal took 46 seconds to put the Tigers up 5. Maddie Brock and Faith Boa would also score in the quarter, giving Georgetown a 9-3 lead at the break. Seven Tigers found the net in the first half, led by Lair's hat trick.
An unexpected spark came for Montreat though in the 2nd as a player picked up her 2nd yellow card, causing her disqualification from the game. With that, the Cavaliers played the rest of the way shorthanded, but it caused them to play faster and more relentless and it began to show in the 3rd. Montreat scored 3 times and only allowed 3 Tiger goals in the 3rd (2 from Madison Diaz), to keep the deficit at 6, heading to the 4th.
In the 4th, Montreat nearly pulled off an improbable comeback. Georgetown could not solve the pack line defense of the Cavaliers and struggled for clean scoring chances, despite being up a player throughout the half. The Cavaliers played even faster and scored 5 unanswered in the first 9:22 to cut the Tigers lead to 12-11. Maddie Brock came up huge just 19 seconds after the 5th straight Montreat goal as she raced down the left side and fired a missile into the net, giving GC a 2-goal lead again with 5:19 to go. Montreat would cut the deficit back to 1 with just over 2 minutes left. The Tigers defense tightened up from there and all Montreat could muster was a shot from 20 yards out with 10 seconds left that went well wide and long. The clock ran out and Georgetown survived.
Aubree Lair led GC with 4 goals and an assist. Madison Diaz tallied 3 goals and 2 assists, while Maddie Brock scored twice. The Tigers also got goals from Faith Boa, Jessi Vazzana, Melanie Wieland, and Katerina Gilbert.
The Tigers will finish the regular season on April 15th with a road trip to Thomas More.
