Lacrosse falls after tough 2nd half
After a back-and-forth, high-scoring 1st half, Aquinas used a strong 2nd half to pull away from Georgetown for a 22-13 win at Great Crossing High School.
Madison Diaz got the Tigers off and rolling with 2 free position goals in the 1st 5 minutes for an early lead. Aquinas answered with 4 straight tallies to take a 2-goal lead. After a Tigers yellow card, Georgetown still found a way to get on the board. Katerina Gilbert scored twice while the Tigers were down a player to tie the game at 4 later in the 1st quarter. Aquinas would take a 5-4 lead with 90 seconds left, but Maddie Brock would score twice in the final minute for a 6-5 Tigers lead after 1.
The swings kept coming in the 2nd. Aquinas scored twice, followed by 3 straight from the Tigers' Faith Boa, Madison Diaz, and Aubree Lair, giving Georgetown a 9-7 lead with 5 minutes to go in the 2nd. Aquinas would answer with 2 goals to tie the game 9-9 at halftime.
The third quarter is where the game turned in favor of the Saints. Aquinas scored twice in the 1st 5 minutes for an 11-9 lead. The offense stalled for both teams as it would be nearly 4 minutes before another goal went on the board: this one from the Tigers' Maddie Brock. Georgetown's momentum was brief though as the offense stalled and Aquinas scored the final 3 goals of the period, taking a 14-10 lead to the 4th.
Aquinas added to their lead as they started the 4th with 5 unanswered to take a 19-10 lead with 6:25 remaining. The Tigers would score 3 of the next 4 in the game to stay within reach, but Aquinas added 2 more in the final 2:20 for the final margin. Draw controls proved a major factor in the result. Aquinas dominated with a 28-10 edge, setting up their high-powered offense.
Madison Diaz and Katerina Gilbert each finished with 4 goals. Diaz added an assist. Maddie Brock ended with 3 goals and an assist. The Tigers also got single goals from Aubree Laie and Faith Boa.
