Case's golden goal puts GC in MSC semifinals
Aly Case took a pass from Avery Blackmon, netting her third goal, the game-winner, in the inaugural Mid-South Conference tournament in Williamsburg, Ky. The No. 9 Tigers (9-7) needed overtime, but on a second offensive wave Blackmon found Case for the victory, 13-12, and advanced to a 1 pm game Friday against top-seeded University of the Cumberlands.
Ave Maria University outscored Georgetown in the second half to force overtime. However, GC's defense held strong as the Gyrenes (5-8) started with possession in the golden-goal session. Tyelar Rohman came up with the ground ball and transitioned it into offense.
Blackmon sent a strong shot just high, but CeCe Haas retained possession and then Blackmon found a wide open Case in the middle of the zone.
In the first half, Blackmon had the highlight of game one, maybe the tournament when it is all said and done, when she caused a turnover, picked up the loose ball and went straight to goal to break a 3-3 tie late in the first half. It started a three-goal Georgetown burst to finish the half.
AMU scored nine goals in the second half to make it interesting. Multiple times the fifth seed drew within one, but it seemed Case's second goal with 3:23 left would help GC eek out the victory in regulation.
Aiyanah Simms and Katelyn Sherman scored twice in more than a minute, knotting the game for the first time since 3-3. Both teams had chances in the final 1:41, but neither could score.
Blackmon finished with a game-high eight points and team-highs of six goals and seven draw controls. Simms led in goals with seven – five in the second half.
Rachel Kidwell was huge in goal with multiple free position saves in the first 30 minutes and 10 total saves. Kaylee Wesolowski turned the Tigers away on multiple occasions and finished with eight saves for AMU.
