Tigers Erase 22-Point Deficit, Beat Campbellsville Again in MSC Quarterfinals
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The fifth-seeded Georgetown College women's basketball team (22-7) beat Campbellsville (22-7) for the second time in a week, 74-71 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference tournament in Bowling Green Arena on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both sides were hitting shots to start things off as the Tigers scored on four of their first six possessions to capture an early 9-7 lead. The pace had slowed by the opening media timeout when Campbellsville pushed in front 15-11 with 4:04 to play. Both sides nearly doubled their points from there as Campbellsville possessed a 27-22 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.
Unlike the first quarter, both offenses stalled out of the gates in the second. Campbellsville managed to score the opening five points of the frame before Anna Long connected on a pair of foul shots at the 7:22 mark. The Campbellsville lead grew to 11 by the media timeout in the second quarter, 37-26 with 4:14 remaining in the half. The Tigers did not score for the final nearly five minutes of the half as Campbellsville ballooned its lead to 43-26 at the break.
In the third quarter, Daisy Gale scored the opening basket for the Tigers, but Campbellsville scored the next seven as the tournament's four seed pushed out to a 50-28 lead. The Tigers slowly chipped away at the deficit, outscoring Campbellsville 21 to 12 in the final minutes of the third to set things up for an exciting finish.
Daysha Reid made the opening five points of the fourth quarter for Georgetown, who quickly were back into the game just two minutes into things. Campbellsville called a timeout, and the Tigers kept pressing the issue, slowly but surely fighting back into it. Daisy Gale controlled the fourth for Georgetown, scoring 13 of her 21 points in the frame. Gale tied the game with 2:27 to go, putting the Tigers in position for the win. Campbellsville tied the game at 71-71 with 38 seconds to go, and outside of a Tiger timeout, Daysha Reid misfired on a 3-pointer, but Anna Long picked up the loose ball and was fouled. Long sank both free throws, and the Tigers came all the way back from down 22 to win, 74-71.
