(RV) Tigers Cruise Over No. 13 Blue Raiders
COLUMBIA, Ky. – The (RV) Georgetown College women's basketball team (20-7, 5-6 MSC) pulled off the 75-62 upset over No. 13 Lindsey Wilson (21-6, 7-4 MSC) in the Biggers Sports Center on Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite making the games first two baskets and controlling an early 4-0 lead, not much else went Georgetown's way in the first quarter. An 11-1 run by the Blue Raiders propelled the hosts to an 11-5 lead which grew to eight by the end of the opening quarter.
The first seven points belonged to the Tigers in the second quarter as Lindsey Wilson needed the better part of three and a half minutes to find the bottom of the net. Georgetown had trimmed it to a 17-14 game by then and had fought back to tie things at 25-25 with just 1:39 to play in the half. Daysha Reid hit one of her two 3-pointers in the game to close the half and push Georgetown ahead by three at the break.
The third quarter saw four of the five starters play all 10 minutes with only the starters scoring in the frame. The Tigers built up as much as a three-point lead but the sides traded baskets for much of the opening five minutes of play. With just over a minute to play a Kayra Freeman 3-pointer pushed the Tigers ahead by one, the margin they held going into the fourth.
Protecting their one-point lead proved difficult in the early stages of the fourth as the teams played to a 59-59 with just under six minutes remaining. Kayra Freeman took over from three. The senior had nine straight points and by the end of things Georgetown was ahead 68-59 with 3:53 to play. The damage was done as the Tigers held on for the 75-62 upset victory.
THE TEAM
Georgetown shot 47.5% from the field. The Tigers were 12-27 (31.8%) from deep and were 12-17 (70.6%) at the free-throw line. GC outrebounded LWU, 45-35. The Tigers picked up eight assists, while the Blue Raiders had more steals, 8-6.
