No. 14 Patriots Hand (RV) Tigers Road Loss
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The (RV) Georgetown College women's basketball team (16-4, 1-3 MSC) dropped a 70-66 game to No. 14 University of the Cumberlands (17-3, 2-2 MSC) in the O. Wayne Rollins Center on Thursday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite losing the opening tip-off, most everything else went well for the Tigers from the jump. Daysha Reid sank three of her first four shots from distance, and Georgetown stormed out to a quick 9-4 lead through the opening two minutes of play. The rest of the opening frame saw the Tigers spread the ball around as Daisy Gale had six, and Kayra Freeman finished the opening period with five points. The Tigers shot nearly 43% from the field after the first 10 minutes and held a 22-13 lead.
The second quarter featured both sides taking their turn at runs. After trading opening baskets, first up was the Patriots' 7-0 run to cut it to a three-point game. Georgetown responded with eight points of its own behind continued clutch shooting from three-point range. The Cumberlands' second 7-0 run of the quarter pulled the hosts within four at 33-29. A pair of quick layups in the closing 90 seconds of the half helped the Tigers to their 37-31 advantage at the break.
After absorbing the Patriots' opening basket to begin the third, the Tigers' offense picked up where it left off in the first half. A 7-0 Georgetown run, fueled by four points from Kayra Freeman, helped the Tigers re-establish their 11-point advantage. From there, both sides traded buckets before the Patriots did some damage in the closing stages. Cumberlands got hot from range, making three 3-pointers in the closing two-plus minutes of the third to make it a 50-49 game heading into the fourth.
The Patriots secured their first lead of the evening on their first shot of the fourth and had gained nearly all the momentum. The Tigers fought back and even took as much as a three-point lead by the 5:48 mark after Reid sank a pair of free throws. From there, though, the hosts nearly doubled up Georgetown in the final minutes of the fourth as the Patriots hung on for the 70-66 win.
