No. 25 Tigers Bounce Back with 76-59 Win over Central Methodist
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 25 Georgetown College women's basketball team (14-1) got back in the win column, 76-59, over Central Methodist (8-6) to close up the Daytona Beach Shootout on Thursday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After winning the opening tip, the offensive tone for the day was set on the Tigers' first possession. Daysha Reid drilled a 3-pointer, just her first of the quarter, to help Georgetown get on the board. From there, Reid took over. The freshman had 11 points and was 4-of-5 from the floor by the media timeout, helping the Tigers to a 15-13 lead. She had 16 points alone in the opening frame, nearly outscoring the Eagles by herself, going 6-of-7 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from range. Georgetown held a 24-19 lead after the first.
The 16 points for Reid at the end of the first is the most for her in the first quarter this season. Coming into the game, she was averaging 5.0 first-quarter points. She had 14 first-quarter points against Carolina, and the 16 points she poured in during the first 10 minutes today are the second-most by a Tiger this season in that span. Taylee Woodbury collected 19 points in the fourth quarter in the blowout win over Webber, going a perfect 8-of-8 from the field in that game, hitting all three 3-pointers she attempted.
Georgetown spread the ball around more in the second quarter as Reid scored just two more points in the quarter. Her 18 points at the half, though, are the second most she's scored in a half this season. She had 23 at the break against Carolina. Three different Tigers scored in the first quarter, as opposed to six finding the bottom of the basket in the second quarter. Georgetown limited Central Methodist to just eight points in the quarter and took a 39-27 lead at halftime. Kayra Freeman hit a buzzer-beater to send the Tigers to the locker room for the third straight game.
The third quarter saw the starters play heavy minutes and was the lone quarter of the day in which the Tigers were outscored. After the opening five-plus minutes saw Georgetown score 15 points and command a 54-38 lead at the media timeout, the final four minutes of the quarter only had one made free throw. During that span, the Eagles outscored the Tigers 8-1 to pull within 55-46 after three complete.
In the fourth, the Tigers absorbed the Eagles' push by sinking their foul shots. Woodbury made the opening three free throws before Jordan Day hit two to maintain the Georgetown lead. Woodbury went on to score eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter to help the Tigers across the finish line. The Tigers maintained a 67-53 lead at the media timeout in the fourth and held on for the 76-59 victory.
