4th Quarter costs Tigers win on Senior Day
Georgetown honored 7 senior student-athletes and 1 student manager before Saturday's home finale against Campbellsville. The seniors were determined to finally end the long draught against Campbellsville and for 3 quarters, the possibility was there. Unfortunately, as has been the case several times in the last couple of weeks, the 4th quarter went the other way as Georgetown was outscored, 25-13, in the 4th and fell to Campbellsville, 80-72.
Georgetown got off to a strong start on senior day with baskets from Izzy Lamparty and AJ Stevenson to get the game going. Another bucket by Lamparty gave Georgetown an early 6-1 lead. Campbellsville answered with 5 straight to tie, but Georgetown turned to its outside game with back-to-back threes from Sophie Smith and Teionni McDaniel for the counter. With less than 3 minutes to play and a 16-10 lead, Georgetown got another 3 from AJ Stevenson and after a Sophie Smith steal, the Tigers got another from Anna Long to take a 22-10 lead and force Campbellsville to a timeout. Georgetown would ultimately take a 22-11 lead to the 2nd.
Campbellsville's pressure caused 2 straight turnovers to start the 2nd quarter, leading to 4 straight points for CU. Anna Long had the answer with another 3 to reestablish a 10-point Georgetown lead with 8:17 to go in the quarter. With 5:53 to play, Teionni McDaniel snapped a scoring drought with another 3 to give GC a 28-17 lead. The Tigers then got to the foul line and after 2 from Trinity Klock, they had a 32-22 lead with 4 minutes until halftime. Campbellsville chipped away and got as close as 6, but a late 3 from AJ Stevenson pushed the lead to 9 at 37-28 at halftime. Georgetown held the lead thanks to 7-13 shooting from beyond the arc in the half.
Georgetown again turned the ball over on its first 2 possessions to start the 3rd. Campbellsville took advantage with 5 points to cut the lead down to 4 in just 53 seconds. Jordan Rogers connected on a jumper and after a CU three, AJ Stevenson hit from deep as Georgetown took a 42-36 lead with 7:25 to play. Campbellsville kept chipping away and got within 2 at 44-42 midway through the 3rd, but a Sophie Smith three gave Georgetown breathing room once more. The teams traded baskets and free throws until Campbellsville got within 1 at 51-50 with 3 minutes to play. Georgetown then got baskets inside from Stevenson and Trinity Klock, followed by 4 straight from Kayra Freeman to take a 59-50 lead with 1:37 to go. As was the case in the quarter, Campbellsville countered with a 5-0 run to end the 3rd and cut Georgetown's lead to 59-55 heading to the 4th.
Izzy Lamparty scored first in the 4th to give GC a 6-point lead. Campbellsville came back with a layup and after an Abby Varney turnover, CU hit a long three to quickly get within a point. After another Georgetown turnover, Campbellsville hit a midrange jumper to take a 62-61 lead with 7:23 to go. Georgetown would not score until 5:02 remaining on a basket from AJ Stevenson to cut Campbellsville's lead to 66-63. Free throws kept Georgetown within reach, but the offense could not hit from the floor as its next field goal came with 1:58 to go as Campbellsville had built a 72-67 lead. Campbellsville was able to stretch out the lead and take the win.
Georgetown shot just 4-13 from the field in the 4th and commmitted 5 turnovers. AJ Stevenson had 3 of the 4 made baskets in the 4th. She finished the game with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Anna Long was the only other Georgetown Tiger in double figures, scoring all 10 of her points in the 1st half.
The Tigers now turn their focus to the road as they travel to Bethel on Thursday with a 6:30pm tip.
