Turnovers doom Tigers in upset loss
Turnovers were an internal issue for Georgetown in the first 2 games of the season. Despite margins of victory, the Tigers coughed the ball up a total of 46 times. The lack of ball security caught up to Georgetown on Saturday. 29 turnovers led to 27 points for MidAmerica Nazarene as Georgetown suffered its first loss of the year, 69-61.
Teionni McDaniel opened the scoring with a putback after an offensive rebound. MNU answered with 4 straight points before Trinity Klock tied the game at 4 just 90 seconds in. Later in the quarter, Annie Watson scored inside and was fouled. The free throw cut the deficit to 12-11 midway through the quarter. Georgetown would not score again until a 3 from Klock with just over 2 minutes left in the quarter. The Tigers committed 6 turnovers in the quarter but forced 5 in trailing 20-16 after 1.
The 2nd quarter proved Georgetown's best of the day. The Tigers scored the first 5 points of the quarter for a slim lead thanks to a 3 from AJ Stevenson and a layup from Klock. MNU called a timeout trailing, 21-20. Anna Long hit a jump shot with 5:05 to go to give the Tigers a 25-23 lead. MNU countered with 8 straight points over the next 2 minutes, 9 seconds before Abby Varney ended the run. Long's late bucket cut the deficit to 36-35 at half. MNU shot just 5-16 from the floor in the quarter but maintained a small lead.
Quarter 3 was a series of basket exchanges with each team taking turns with a slim lead. MNU led by as many as 6 in the quarter, but Georgetown was able to stay within reach thanks to Trinity Klock scoring 8 of the Tigers' 14 in the frame. Each team made 6 baskets in the quarter as MNU took a 51-49 lead to the 4th.
After an early Teionni McDaniel 3 in the 4th, the quarter proved one the Tigers would just as soon forget. Georgetown turned the ball over 11 times in the final 10 minutes, but the defense kept the team in it. MNU shot just 4-13 in the quarter as Georgetown hung around. A lay-in from Klock with 1:44 left brought Georgetown within 1 at 60-59. The Tigers got a stop, but McDaniel missed a go-ahead shot inside. On the next possession, MNU's lay-up attempt was blocked by Klock but an offensive rebound and stick back pushed the margin to 3 with 39 seconds left. Another missed lay-up followed by 2 MNU free throws made it a 64-59 game. Georgetown turned over twice more in the final 18 seconds as MNU hit free throws for the 7-point win.
Trinity Klock was the only Tiger to reach double-figure scoring with 23 points and 9 rebounds She also turned the ball over 7 times. Teionni McDaniel scored 9. Anna Long and Annie Watson each put 8 points on the board. The Tigers now get 12 days off before their next game against Washington Adventist on Thursday, November 14th.
