Strong Second Half Gives Tigers Win over Life

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Headed into the final 10 minutes of Monday night's game against Life University, the Georgetown College women's basketball team found itself trailing by four and in danger of dropping a key home game in the Mid-South Conference standings. However, the Tigers were able to ground the Running Eagles and claim a double-digit, come-from-behind win, 59-49.

Georgetown (16-7, 9-6 MSC) held Life (6-16, 2-12 MSC) to only six points in the final frame to flip the margin by 14 points.

Life scored first in the game and led for much of the opening quarter. The Running Eagles led by as many as three at 5-2, and though Georgetown tied the score at 5 on a Lexie Stapleton 3-pointer, the Tigers did not grab their first lead until the 2:49 mark of the opening period. At that time, Callie Jackson finished at the rim to give the Tigers an 11-9 lead, and moments later, it was Grace White who connected from deep to give Georgetown the lead after 10 minutes, 14-11.

Life dominated the second stanza. The Running Eagles opened the period on a 12-0 run to lead 23-14 in more than three minutes of game time, and eventually led by 11 points in the frame, 29-18, before the Tigers whittled the halftime deficit down to seven, 32-25.

The Tigers roared out of the gates at halftime. Life opened the second half scoring, but Georgetown followed with an 8-0 run that closed the gap to 34-33 on a layup from Jalynn Landversicht with 4:14 to play in the third quarter. The Tigers were unable to get the game leveled, though, and headed into the final period, the Tigers trailed 43-39.

Jazzmyn Elston buried a triple 1:01 into the final frame to cut the deficit to a single point, and moments later, it was Elston who connected again, this time on a 2-point jumper, to give Georgetown its second lead of the night. In all, Elston scored 16 of the Tigers' 20 points in the final frame, as the Tigers rallied to take the win, sealing it at the free throw line from Elston and Stapleton in the final moments.

Elston led the Tigers with a 25-point effort on 8-for-17 shooting that included a 5-for-10 showing from long distance. Jackson added 11 in the game, and White grabbed a team leading six boards and dished out a game-high six assists.

Georgetown shot 20-for-53 (37.7%) from the floor and 8-for-20 (40%) from behind the 3-point line. At the free throw stripe, the Tigers made 11 of 15 (73.3%) attempts.

Georgetown will wrap up their 4-game home stand on Thursday night when they host the Phoenix of Cumberland University (9-11, 4-9 MSC). Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Eastern.
