Georgetown Women Fall at Bethel

McKENZIE, Tenn. - The third quarter proved to be problematic this week for the Georgetown College women's basketball team in its swing through West Tennessee. The Tigers scored only 16 points in the third quarters at Freed-Hardeman University and Bethel University, and as a result, the Tigers saw halftime leads vanish in both games.

Georgetown (13-7, 6-6 MSC) made only one shot in the final 6:36 of the third quarter on Saturday as Bethel (11-9, 5-7 MSC) out-scored GC 30-6 in the frame and the Tigers fell, 73-59.

The game was close early. Bethel scored first and eased out to a 13-10 lead before the Tigers bounced back. Over the final two minutes of the first period, Georgetown put together a 7-0 run that gave the Tigers a 17-13 lead after 10 minutes. The game remained tight early in the second frame as well as Bethel rallied to tie the game at 21, but a 7-0 Georgetown run midway through the period gave the Tigers their biggest lead to that point of the afternoon, 32-25, on a Jazzmyn Elston 3-point bucket with 3:57 to play in the first half. Georgetown extended the lead to eight twice, but Bethel closed the halftime gap to 36-21.

That was when the Tigers went cold. Georgetown made only two of its 12 field goal attempts in the third frame, and missed all five of 3-point attempts. Meanwhile, Bethel was white-hot from the floor, blistering the nets at a 12-for-17 (70.6%) clip from the field, and the Lady 'Cats made 4-of-5 (80%) from deep during the stanza. The Tigers allowed the final 17 points of the third frame.

Elston led Georgetown with 16 points, Callie Jackson chipped in a dozen, and Izzy Lamparty added 11 and hauled in a team-leading seven rebounds. Sophie Smith handed out four assists as well in the contest.

Georgetown was 21-for-57 (36.8%) from the field in the game, including 5-for-24 (20.8%) from long range. At the charity stripe, Georgetown was excellent, connecting on 12 of 13 (92.3%) foul shots. The teams finished deadlocked with 30 rebounds, and the Tigers bench was a particular bright spot, out-scoring that of the Lady 'Cats 33-19.

The Tigers will return home Thursday night, Jan. 27, to open a four game homestand when they welcome the Bears of The University of Pikeville (10-8, 4-7 MSC). Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. Eastern.
