Softball drops game 2 to Patriots
After a tight 4-2 loss on Saturday, Georgetown entered Sunday's doubleheader against Cumberlands with optimism for an upset. The opening game of the day went the other way as Cumberlands exploded for 16 runs in the 3rd inning alone to go on to a 17-0 win.
Addi Watson got the start for Georgetown and got through the 1st inning with nothing more than a leadoff single. The Tigers had a chance for the early lead in the bottom of the inning. With 1 out and Michalee Clay on 1st, Watson helped her own cause with a single to right. Two batters later, Ainsley Herron singled to left to load the bases. Alanna Pierce was unable to drive runs home as she grounded out to 3rd to end the threat.
Cumberlands put pressure on Watson in the 2nd. A walk and single started the inning and after a groundout, the Patriots put runners on 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. The next batter chopped a grounder to 3rd. Lilli Koch grabbed the ball and tagged out the runner down the line for the 2nd out. Watson then induced a groundball to end the inning.
Georgetown went down in order in the 2nd to move the game to the fateful 3rd inning. With 1 out and 1 on, Watson allowed a walk and single to load the bases. The Patriots' Bailey Turnbow then stepped in and launched a grand slam clear over the left field fence for a 4-0 UC lead. After an error in centerfield, Watson gave up a 2-run homer and was pulled in favor of Elle Prewitt. The Tiger reliever fared no better. Prewitt failed to record an out, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits. Taylor Reid came on to pitch and also struggled, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks and 4 runs, while only recording 1 out. Emma O'Daniel eventually came in to put the inning to an end. In total, Cumberlands sent 21 batters to the plate, scoring 16 runs on 11 hits to put the game out of reach.
Georgetown had chances in the 4th and 5th innings to avoid the shutout but left 2 runners on base in each inning to end the game after 5. Addi Watson took the loss, dropping to 3-4 on the year.
