Tigers overcome 6-run deficit to sweep UPike
Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader proved comfortable for the Georgetown Tigers. Game 2 was anything but as UPike raced out to a big, early lead. Georgetown stayed poised and was able to rally from a 6-0 deficit and pull out a 10-7 win to sweep the Bears.
With a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd, UPike was able to get to Tiger starter, Emma O'Daniel. With 1 out, the Bears drew a walk, followed by 2 singles to load the bases. O'Daniel's final pitch of the day was a hit batter to force a run in and give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Elle Prewitt took over on the mound and allowed a single to center that scored 2 to double the UPike lead. A double followed to bring 2 more home for a 6-0 lead. The day closed on O'Daniel having allowed 5 earned runs in 1.1 innings.
Georgetown's offense started chipping away in the bottom of the 2nd. With 1 out, Delaney Vaughn ripped a grounder to 3rd that was misplayed, allowing Vaughn to reach. Ainsley Herron doubled to center to send Vaughn to 3rd. Haylee Stansbury then lofted a sac fly to right that easily scored Vaughn. As Herron went to 3rd, the throw there got away and Herron scooted home to cut UPike's lead to 6-2 after 2. Prewitt retired the side in order in the top of the 3rd and got more help in the bottom of the inning. Lilli Koch started with a double to right center. She came home on a Stevie Shepherd single to center. Shepherd went to 2nd on the throw, which proved important as 2 straight groundouts followed, allowing Shepherd to score to bring the Tigers within 2 at 6-4.
The teams traded runs in the 4th inning to give UPike a 7-5 lead heading to the 5th. Georgetown drew closer as Kinley Lucas launched her 2nd homer of the day to bring GC within a run at 7-6 heading to the 6th. Prewitt shut the door on UPike and was rewarded in the bottom of the 6th. Kady Dennis and Lilli Koch started the inning with a respective single and double. Stevie Shepherd singled to right and went to 2nd as Dennis scored to tie the game at 7. Alanna Pierce followed with a single through the right side to bring Koch home and give the Tigers their first lead. Pierce stole 2nd to set up the biggest play of the game. On a wild pitch, Shepherd raced home. The throw back to the plate was off the mark, and Pierce never stopped running all the way home for a 10-7 lead. Addi Watson came on for the top of the 7th and needed just 9 pitches to retire the side in order for her 1st save to preserve the win and sweep.
Elle Prewitt got the win after going 4.2 innings and allowing just 2 runs during the comeback. Georgetown's balanced offense struck again as 6 different Tigers had at least 1 RBI in the win.
