Softball shut out in game 2 against Lindsey Wilson
After a tough loss to start the 3-game series with Lindsey Wilson on Thursday, Georgetown was looking for a bounce back in the day's 2nd game. The Tigers pitching was there, but the offense could not come up with a timely hit in a 4-0 loss.
Emma Cummings had the ball for game 2 and just like game 1, Lindsey Wilson jumped out right away. A single and HBP put the first 2 runners on base. Cummings retired the next 2, but with runners on 2nd & 3rd, a sharp single to center brought both home to immediately give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead. Georgetown managed nothing more than a Stevie Shepherd single in the bottom of the inning.
Cummings bounced back with a 1-2-3 2nd. The bottom of the inning was Georgetown's best chance for runs. Kady Dennis led off with a walk and moved to 2nd after a perfect bunt from Ainsley Herron. Michalee Clay followed with a bunt in mind to move the runners. Clay delivered a beauty and beat out the throw to load the bases with no out. Haylee Stansbury followed with a shallow fly to right. Kady Dennis sprinted home on the attempted sac fly, but a perfect throw cut her down at the plate for a 9-2 double play. The Tigers still had a chance with 2 out and runners at 2nd & 3rd, but Delaney Vaughn struck out swinging to end the inning and keep Georgetown scoreless.
Lindsey Wilson took advantage in the top of the 3rd. A leadoff double was followed by a long homerun to left center that doubled the LWC lead to 4. Cummings managed to retire the rest of the side with no issue, but the damage was done and so was the day for Cummings as she was lifted for Emma O'Daniel in the top of the 4th.
In the bottom of the 4th, Georgetown had another chance for runs. With 2 out, Ainsley Herron reached base with another brilliant bunt single. Michalee Clay followed with a rope to 2nd that the fielder could not handle. Herron and Clay then stole 3rd and 2nd, but Haylee Stansbury grounded out to end the 4th.
Emma O'Daniel struck out the first 2 of the 5th inning and worked around a walk to keep the deficit at 4. All Georgetown managed in the bottom of the inning was an opposite-field single from Alanna Pierce. In the 6th, Lindsey Wilson managed to put runners on 2nd & 3rd, but O'Daniel induced a ground ball with 2 out to end the threat. Ainsley Herron delivered a double with 2 outs in the 6th, but again, the Tigers could not come up with a way to get the run home.
Elle Prewitt pitched a clean 7th inning, but Georgetown went down with 3 straight strikeouts to end the game. Emma Cummings fell to 4-4 on the year. Emma O'Daniel provided solid relief work, going 3 innings and allowing no runs on 3 hits.
The Tigers will look to salvage the finale against Lindsey Wilson on Friday. First pitch from the GC Softball Complex is set for 1:00pm.
