O'Daniel deals CG shutout to complete sweep of Union
After a convincing game 1 win over Union Commonwealth, Georgetown turned to freshman pitcher, Emma O'Daniel, to keep the momentum going. The young Tiger delivered her best outing to date with a complete game shutout as Georgetown took game 2 over the Bulldogs, 7-0.
After a quiet 1st inning, Georgetown's offense gave O'Daniel lead in the 2nd. After 2 walks and 2 stolen bases, Georgetown had Michalee Clay on 3rd and Kady Dennis on 2nd. Haylee Stansbury followed with a single that scored both runners to put the Tigers up. O'Daniel allowed a single and walk in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Bulldogs could not find a way to bring either runner home as Georgetown led 2-0 after 2.
The Tigers added another run in the 3rd. Ainsley Herron doubled, stole 3rd and was brought home by an Alanna Pierce single for a 3-0 lead. O'Daniel returned to the circle in the bottom of the inning and struck out 2 of 3 batters she faced in order.
Georgetown continued to play add-on in the 4th. Kady Dennis led off with a single and moved to 2nd after a Grace Losey sacrifice. Haylee Stansbury continued her good day with another RBI single. She came all the way around on the next at-bat as Delaney Vaughn roped a double to the outfield to extend the Tiger lead to 5-0.
In the bottom of the 4th, Emma O'Daniel got 2 quick grounders to short before getting into a jam. A walk, followed by a single put runners on 2nd and 3rd. The freshman showed strong poise by striking out the next Bulldog hitter to retire the side and preserve the shutout.
The offense gave O'Daniel more support in the top of the 6th. Delaney Vaughn reached via an error and went to 2nd on a Kinley Lucas single. 2 batters later, Alanna Pierce delivered an RBI double to score Vaughn for a 6-0 lead. Michalee Clay followed with an RBI grounder to 1st to bring Lucas home for the 7th run of the game.
Emma O'Daniel allowed 2 2-out singles in the bottom of the 7th but got a grounder to Pierce to end the game. It took the freshman 126 pitches to go the distance and preserve the doubleheader sweep. O'Daniel allowed scattered 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5 in the win. 8 of Georgetown's 9 starters recorded a hit once more. Haylee Stansbury went 3-4 with 3 RBI. The Tigers finished with 13 hits and 4 more stolen bases in the win.
Georgetown looks to continue the momentum with a Saturday road trip to Pikeville. The first pitch is set for 1:00pm.
