6-run 5th inning dooms Tigers

Georgetown was on track to move on in the Mid-South Conference Tournament through 4 innings against Cumberland, but the 5th inning turned the story as the Phoenix scored 6 times in the inning to go on to a 7-6 win. The loss sends Georgetown to an elimination game on Friday.

After her perfect game against UPike on Wednesday, Sarah Claxon was back on the hill against Cumberland. The Phoenix scored an unearned run in the 1st for an early lead. Claxon would get the run back in the bottom of the inning via a fielder's choice that scored Ashley Shelton, tying the game at 1 after 1.

Georgetown added to its lead in the 3rd. Kylee West led off with a bunt single. She would score on a RBI triple from Kaylyn Barnett to give the Tigers the lead. Barnett would be brought home via a sacrifice fly from Ashley Shelton. After a Sarah Claxon single and advance to 2nd, Cassie Rannells laced a double to right center, scoring Claxon and pushing the lead to 4-1 heading to the 4th. Kaylyn Barnett would tally another RBI in the 4th with a sacrifice fly that scored Ella Forish, giving Georgetown a 5-1 lead as the game moved to the 5th.

The Phoenix attacked immediately in the inning. A single followed by a 2-run homer cut the lead to 2 and spelled the end of Claxon's day on the mound. Emma Cummings was brought in but struggled, allowing 3 singles, a walk, and a run. She would be pulled in favor of Kelsie Hill, who entered with the bases loaded and only 1 out. Hill would walk the 1st batter she faced, which brought home the game-tying run. Another single and sac fly would follow before Hill could get out of the inning and Cumberland had stunningly taken a 7-5 lead. Georgetown would fight back in the bottom of the inning. Mallory Myers reached via an error and stole 2nd. She would move to third on a ground out, then score via a Cassie Rannells sac fly, to get GC within 7-6.

Georgetown would get one more chance in the bottom of the 7th. Myers again reached via an error to start the inning and advance to 2nd on the play. Sarah Claxon would follow with a sacrifice bunt which moved Myers to 3rd with only 1 out. Cassie Rannells then stepped in and hit a grounder to 1st. Myers was cut down at home for the 2nd out of the inning. With Rannells on first, Peyton Beger grounded back to the pitcher to end the game.

The Tigers will look to stave off elimination as they take on the loser of Campbellsville/Freed-Hardeman on Friday afternoon.
