Barnett, Beger home runs power Tigers rally for sweep

Georgetown took on Shawnee State on Friday looking for the 3-game sweep to keep pace in the MSC standings. Through 4 innings, the sweep looked in doubt, but thanks to 5th inning home runs from Peyton Beger and Kaylyn Barnett, the Tigers' offense woke up en route to a 9-3 win.

After a quiet 1st inning, Shawnee State scored 3 runs (2 earned) off Emma Cummings in the bottom of the 2nd to take the lead. In the top of the 3rd, Georgetown began to find some momentum. Stevie Shepherd drew a lead-off walk. Destiny Wallace followed and reached via an error, allowing Shepherd to get to 3rd. Barnett would then step in and deliver a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Shepherd and getting the Tigers on the board.

The action would pick up in the top of the 5th. Peyton Beger led off the inning and launched a bomb over the outfield wall to get the Tigers within 1. Ashley Shelton followed with a single and would move to 2nd on a Shepherd sacrifice. Destiny Wallace was hit by a pitch to put 2 runners on for Barnett, who stepped in and crushed a ball long gone, giving Georgetown a 5-3 lead.

The momentum continued in the top of the 6th as Sarah Claxon led off with a single to left. Brooke Chick would run for Claxon and move to 2nd after Cassie Rannells reached on a fielder's choice. The Tigers put a double steal in motion and thanks to a Bears error, Chick scored and Rannells went to 3rd. Peyton Beger followed with a fly ball to center that was dropped by the centerfielder, scoring Rannells. Kylee West took over for Beger on the basepath at 2nd. West stole 3rd and would score on a passed ball to cap a 3-run 6th and put the Tigers ahead 8-3.

Mallory Myers would record the final RBI of the day on a groundout in the 7th that scored Barnett. Kelsie Hill pitched a 1-2-3 7th for her 3rd straight save in the series to finish off the sweep.

The win gives the Tigers a 5-game win streak for the 3rd time on the season and moves them 11 games over .500. They will come home on Wednesday, April 26th for a makeup game against Thomas More. First pitch will be at 6:00pm at the Tiger Softball Complex.
