2-out magic, triple play carry GC in game 1
The old addage in softball is "2 outs will get you to heaven." Georgetown was living high and mighty in game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against UNOH as they scored 7 runs with 2 outs, en route to a 9-5 win, taking game 3 of the series.
The Tigers got the offense going immediately. Kaylyn Barnett and Stevie Shepherd reached to lead off the bottom of the 1st. 2 batters later, Mallory Myers delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Barnett. Cassie Rannells then slapped a double down the left field line, scoring Shepherd, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. GC would add 1 more in the inning thanks to a Sarah Claxon RBI double.
In the 2nd, Barnett and Shepherd each singled. With 2 outs, Mallory Myers doubled to center, scoring Barnett, and putting the Tigers up 4-1 after 2. The 2-out magic continued in the 3rd. After 2 fly outs to start the inning, Kylee West reached on a bunt single and scored all the way from 1st on a Barnett double. Stevie Shepherd followed with an RBI single, giving Georgetown a 6-1 lead after 3.
After UNOH got 2 runs in the top of the 4th, Georgetown delivered another 2-out strike in the 5th. Peyton Beger led off with a double off the right field wall. 2 batters later, Kaylyn Barnett doubled again, scoring Beger, and giving GC a 7-3 lead.
UNOH threatened everything in the top of the 6th. The Racers' first 4 batters reached base, with 2 scoring. With the bases loaded and no outs, a UNOH pinch-hitter popped a line drive right to Cassie Rannells at 2nd base, who stepped on 2nd, then threw to 1st for the 4-3 triple play, getting the Tigers out of the massive jam. Georgetown would seize on the momentum by putting 2 more runs on the board in the bottom of the 6th, closing the game out with a 9-5 win.
Emma Cummings started on the mound and allowed 4 hits and 3 runs in 3.1 innings. Sarah Claxon pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing 2 runs and 5 hits.
