(RV) Tigers Sweep Past Red Storm

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The (RV) Georgetown College men's volleyball team (5-6, 3-1 RSC) beat the University of Rio Grande (8-5, 1-3 RSC) on Tuesday night in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.

The Tigers defeated the Red Storm in three sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both sides split the opening 10 points before the Red Storm rattled off three straight points, capitalizing on some Tiger attack errors to lead 8-5. From there, Georgetown slowly got back into it with some key kills. Georgetown fought back to tie things at 16-16 and, as part of a 6-0 run, took the lead for good at 19-16. Despite the Red Storm pulling back to within one, the Tigers held on for the 25-21 set one lead.

Rio Grande won four of the first five points to start the second set before Georgetown rallied to tie it at 4-4. The Tigers took a 10-8 lead behind a Luis Vivius kill and did not surrender the lead from there. With things tied at 11-11, the set changed. Georgetown forced a Rio Grande timeout with three straight points at the 14-11 mark. As part of a 6-2 run, the Tigers led 17-13, forcing the second Rio Grande timeout of the set. Georgetown finished off the second with a Michal Bak kill, followed by a service error.

Georgetown dropped the opening point of the third, but rattled off six of the next seven points to take an early 6-2 lead. After a Rio Grande timeout at the 6-2 mark yielded the visitors a point, Georgetown rattled off the next five to take firm control of the third, 11-3. Rio Grande called its final timeout, trailing 15-7 after consecutive attack errors set up the eight-point deficit. From there, slowly took the set and finished things off with a service error, 25-18.

THE TEAM
Georgetown hit .338 as a squad, with URG earning a .148 mark. The Tigers had 34 kills and 31 assists. Georgetown collected five service aces and 27 digs.  

THE PLAYERS
Michal Bak produced a team-high 10 kills with four digs and an assist.
Adam Szewinski had five kills with three block solos and a dig.
Kristjan Unt added five kills to go with five digs and two service aces.

UP NEXT
The Tigers hit the road for their next seven games, beginning with Indiana East (5-2, 3-1 RSC) on Friday, March 6.
