Heinemann leads Tigers sweep of Thomas More
Finn Heinemann turned in a stellar all-around performance with 27 assists, 5 digs and 4 kills as Georgetown swept Thomas More on Tuesday night to remain perfect in MSC play.
Thomas More took the opening point of the 1st set but Georgetown responded with 4 of the next 5 to take the lead. The Tigers would slowly grow the lead as the set went along. At 5-4, Georgetown rattled off 4 straight points, 3 with Liam Morrissey on serve, to take a 9-4 lead. TMU would fight back and get within 1 at 15-14 but would not get level as Georgetown took advantage of Saints attack errors to maintain control. With a 20-18 lead, Tyler Chavez sent a kill to the floor, putting Finn Heinemann on serve. Heinemann delivered 2 aces and an assist to close out the 1st set, 25-18.
In the 2nd set, Thomas More got going early and built a 10-6 lead. After a Saints service error, Heinemann went back to serve and Georgetown promptly scored 5 in a row to surge into the lead at 12-10, forcing a Saints timeout. The Saints responded to go back ahead 14-13, but after a Ryan Gunn kill, CJ Bride took serve and the Tigers scored 3 more in a row to go ahead, 17-14. The back-and-forth continued as the Saints rallied to tie the set at 19. Another attack error from Thomas More put Miguel Vega on serve with a 20-19 lead. Vega would remain there for the rest of the set. 2 kills from Tyler Chavez, 1 from Finn Heinemann, and 2 Saints errors gave the Tigers the final 5 points to storm away with a 25-19 win.
Georgetown kept the momentum going and poured it on Thomas More to start the 3rd set. The Tigers raced out to a 9-1 lead in the 3rd behind strong serves from Heinemann and Tyler Laha. Thomas More would not get back within 8 points for the rest of the set and Georgetown closed out the match with a 25-15 3rd set win.
Ryan Gunn led the Tigers up front with 12 kills and hit at a .450 clip. Liam Morrissey added 9 kills, while Tyler Chavez and Tyree Wesley finished with 6 and 5, respectively. Tiger defending held Thomas More to fewer kills than attack errors in the match and no aces.
Georgetown still has yet to drop a set in MSC play and can close out a perfect-perfect conference year in the regular season finale at Campbellsville on Friday night at 7:00pm.
