Tigers cap home slate with 3-0 win

In front of an excited Davis-Reid Alumni Gym crowd, the Georgetown Tigers delivered their own excitement on the court in a 3-0 sweep of Lawrence Tech, improving to 16-3 in their final home match of 2023.

The Tigers and Blue Devils got after things in a hurry, splitting the first 16 points of the opening set. The Blue Devils would then go on a 7-2 run to take a 15-10 lead. With a 20-17 LTU lead, Georgetown started its rally. Kills from Miguel Vega and Tyree Wesley, followed by a Wesley block, tied the set at 21, forcing a LTU timeout. Liam Morrissey would give the Tigers its first lead at 22-21 out of the timeout. After an exchange of serves, the Tigers had a set point at 24-23, but could not convert. LTU would have a set point itself, but Morrissey delivered again to tie the set at 25. A Ryan Gunn kill and an attack error from LTU gave the Tigers the opener, 27-25.

LTU was undaunted as they took an early lead in the second set that would reach 10-4. A kill from Tyree Wesley and Tyler Chavez got the Tigers closer but still with work to do. With the deficit at 13-10 and Finn Heinemann on serve, Georgetown's defense forced the Blue Devils into errors that tied the score at 13. The Tigers would slowly take control and work itself to a set point with a 24-18 lead. The Blue Devils would not go quietly as they held off 4 set points. Their effort at a 5th point saved saw a serve go into the net, giving the Tigers a 25-22 set win and a 2-0 match lead.

Georgetown did not wait for a mid-set rally in the 3rd to assert itself. The Tigers scored 12 of the first 18 points in the 3rd. It was then time for the Blue Devils to answer and they did with a 6-1 run to cut the Tiger lead to 13-12. They would draw within a point 4 more times in the set but could never draw level. The Tigers maintained their composure and level of play to the end. Tyree Wesley finished off the night with the last of his 4 solo blocks for the 25-21 win in the 3rd, completing the sweep. Wesley also tallied 6 kills with a .308 hitting percentage.

Liam Morrissey's final night in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym ended with a match-high 14 kills, 7 digs, and a .379 hitting percentage. Ryan Gunn added 10 kills on the other side, while Miguel Vega came with 6 more up the middle. CJ Bride paced the backline with an impressive 12 digs, while Finn Heinemann tallied 32 assists.

The Tigers now look to remain perfect in the Mid-South Conference as they head to Rio Grande on Thursday night, with a scheduled 6:00pm start time.
