Morrissey leads sweep on Senior Day
With family in attendance for Senior Day, Liam Morrissey made sure to put on a performance they would remember as he led the Tigers to a sweep of Cumberland, keeping the team perfect in conference play.
The opening set proved to be a defensive battle as neither team hit above .125, keeping the set tight most of the way. With the set tied at 17, Georgetown finally broke through. 2 Ryan Gunn kills and 3 CU errors gave Georgetown a 22-17 lead and breathing room at the perfect time. Gunn would eventually end the set off an assist from Finn Heinemann, giving the Tigers the opener. 25-20.
Georgetown found rhythm on offense in the 2nd, committing just 2 attack errors, but Cumberland proved scrappy and would not go away. The teams traded points for most of the set. Neither side scored more than 2 consecutive points on serve the entire set. The Tigers again took free points late due to Phoenix errors and won the 2nd set, 25-20.
Set 3 proved a different story as Georgetown took the momentum and went to work early. 3 early kills from Senior Liam Morrissey led an 8-2 Tigers start to the 3rd. Cumberland would scrap back within 3 at 10-7 before Georgetown delivered the knockout blow. The Tigers answered with 6 unanswered to take a 16-7 lead, ending the hope of a rally for the Phoenix. Morrissey would tally 3 more kills as the set went on as Georgetown continued to pull away, ultimately winning the 3rd, 25-14, to sweep the match.
On his day, Liam Morrissey finished with 12 kills, 4 digs and 2 total blocks. Ryan Gunn added 10 kills and 10 digs, while Tyler Chavez tallied 7 along with 3 assists. Finn Heinemann paced the Tigers offense with 29 assists.
The Tigers also honored Elliott White, a member of the program through Team Impact, with a framed team photo before the game to honor his contributions to the team this season.
