6th-ranked Tigers take out #7 Warriors
After a thrilling 5-set comeback of Lourdes on Saturday, Georgetown returned to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym for a Sunday matinee against the 7th-ranked Indiana Tech Warriors. Neither team was at its best in the early going. Indiana Tech was also coming off an emotional game the night before against Menlo and both struggled especially on service. It would be a theme throughout the match as both finished with over 20 service errors. Indiana Tech held the lead for most of the first set. The Tigers would pull even multiple times but the Warriors nearly had the answer every time. Trailing 21-18, Georgetown finally found its legs, going on a 5-1 run to take its first lead at 23-22. They would do just enough to grab the set, 26-24.
Set 2 saw Georgetown maintain a small lead for a large portion of the action. Indiana Tech would lead 3-2 but not be ahead again until it was 17-16, Warriors. Ultimately, the teams continued to exchange services until Indiana Tech carved out a small gap late and took the 2nd set, 25-22, leveling the match.
The third set was another seesaw affair for the 1st half. Neither team would allow the other to build any lead of significance. Georgetown led 13-12 and then scored 5 of the next 6 to grab an 18-13 lead and a small measure of breathing room. The lead would swell to 8 at 22-14, thanks to 3 straight Warrior errors off of CJ Bride serves. Indiana Tech called a timeout to stop the bleeding but it was too late. A Warriors rally never materialized and Georgetown took the 3rd, 25-20. The Tigers defense proved to be the difference as the Warriors hit .000 in the set.
Set 4 was all Georgetown. The anticipated rally from Indiana Tech never materialized. The Warriors offensive struggles continued as they hit just .130 in the 4th, compared to .455 for Georgetown. The Tigers never trailed nor were tied in the set and steamrolled to a 25-15 4th set win to close out the match, 3-1, to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Ryan Gunn led the heavy hitters up front for Georgetown, with 13 kills, 7 digs and a .458 hit percentage. After resting against Lourdes, Liam Morrissey came back strong with 13 kills and 11 digs. Kacper Dobrowolski capped a brilliant weekend with 36 assists, 4 aces, 4 digs and 3 assisted blocks. CJ Bride kept the back line steady throughout with 15 digs.
The Tigers next get back into MSC play on Tuesday with a road trip to Midway. First serve is set for 7:00pm.
