Gunn leads Tigers sweep of Phoenix

Ryan Gunn recorded 12 kills, a .400 hitting percentage, and 9 digs to lead Georgetown to a 3-0 sweep of Cumberland to kick off Mid-South Conference play. The Tigers are now 4-0 on the year and have still yet to drop a set in any match.

In set 1, the lead for Georgetown grew methodically as the Tigers were able to take advantage of a host of Phoenix errors. Nine attack errors in the set for the Phoenix set the tone for the night and allowed Georgetown to slowly pull away. The Tigers stayed true to form on offense with a .316 hitting percentage in the set en route to a 25-17 win. On the other side, Cumberland had just 7 kills and a negative hitting percentage.

Set 2 proved to be much tougher for the Tigers as Cumberland regathered its offense to the tune of a .241 percentage in the set with only 5 errors. The Tigers proved equally as tough, hitting .261, and never trailing in the set. It was tied at 1, 2, 3 and 4 early on, but the Tigers then scored 3 straight to take a 7-4 lead. Cumberland would never draw even again. They would get within 1 on 5 separate occassions, but Georgetown did just enough to take the set, 25-23, and go up 2-0 in the match.

Set 3 proved to be much like the opener for both sides. Georgetown hit nearly .300, while Cumberland had more errors than kills once more. The Phoenix did tally the opening point but Georgetown would score 7 of the next 9 for the early lead, to go up 7-3. Cumberland got back within 8-5, but would get no closer the rest of the way. The set worked its way to a 20-17 Georgetown lead and after a kill from Sean Bohler, the Tigers had Reece Brown on the serve line, and the junior would not leave it. Brown served out the final 4 points for the 25-17 set 3 win and 3-0 sweep of the match.

In addition to 12 kills from Gunn, the Tigers got 6 kills each from Tyree Wesley and Tyler Chavez. Setter Kacper Dobrowolski was stellar once more, tallying 25 assists, 10 digs, 5 total blocks, and a kill. Sean Bohler and Reece Brown chipped in with 4 kills each as the Tigers hit .290 for the match against just .048 for Cumberland.

The Tigers return to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Friday to battle 8th-ranked Menlo. First serve is set for 6:00pm ET.
