Tigers sweep Culver-Stockton in season opener
The 6th-ranked Georgetown Tigers took the court on Friday afternoon looking to make an early statement ahead of its nightcap against #12 Saint Xavier. The Tigers took care of business in a 3-0 sweep of Culver-Stockton College, 25-10, 25-14, and 25-15.
Georgetown made an early statement against the undermanned Wildcats with 12 kills and 0 errors in the opening set compared to 6 & 6 for CSC. After an early 1-1 tie, the Tigers scored 6 of the next 7 and never looked back, cruising to a 25-10 win in the opener. The Wildcats tried to use the set break to gather themselves and get going, but the Tigers were having none of it. Georgetown scored the 1st 4 points of set 2. Culver-Stockton never got back within 4 the rest of the set. The Tigers hitting efficiency was on display once more. 11 kills and just 2 errors led to a .600 hitting percentage in the set, while CSC committed more errors (7) than kills (5) as they struggled to find ways through the tall Tiger front. Georgetown took the set, 25-14, to go up 2-0 in the match.
In set 3, Culver-Stockton came out swinging in an effort to continue the match into a potential 4th set. The two teams traded points for the first portion of the set with the Wildcats eventually grabbing a 7-5 lead. From there, Georgetown got its energy back, scoring 10 of the next 13 points, to grab a 15-10 lead. CSC would take the next point to get back within 4, but the Tigers put their collective foot down, going on a 10-4 run to close the match in straight sets, 25-15 in the 3rd.
In total, Georgetown's efficiency was just too much for Culver-Stockton. The Tigers had 35 kills against just 3 errors with a hitting percentage of .711. CSC finished with just 19 kills and 21 errors for a hitting percentage of -.034. Finn Heinemann led the Georgetown offense with 28 assists. Tyler Chavez was the high man up front with 8 kills. Ryan Gunn and Liam Morrissey added 7 kills each.
