Hogg's hat trick leads crushing win over IU East
Mother Nature wiped out the Georgetown Women's Soccer home opener against Taylor less than 2 weeks ago. She nearly did the same to the men's opener on Friday night. Thunder and lightning persisted in the Georgetown area well past the scheduled start time of 7:00pm. The teams were forced to sit and wait even though very little rain fell at Toyota Stadium. Discussions were had about a possible postponement or cancellation, but the teams and fans chose to wait it out. The delay ultimately last 1 hour, 50 minutes, but proved worth it for the Tigers and their faithful fans. The team exploded for 3 goals in the first 9 minutes en route to an 8-1 drubbing of IU East.
Interim Head Coach John Manga wanted his team to come out attacking and aggressive from the start and his starting 11 got the message. Pedro Canal took the initiative with a steal deep in the IU East box and after a spinning move around a defender, he fired a low line drive past the Red Wolves keeper into the net for a goal 38 seconds into the match. Daniel Saer, fresh off a 2-goal 2nd half against Berea, didn't wait much longer to get in on the action as he was set up by Charlie Hogg in the box for a tap in at 4:29 of the half for a 2-0 lead. Canal kept the pressure on as he tallied his 2nd at the 8:28 mark off a terrific pass from Esteban Betancurt Cardona.
The lead became 4-0 in the 13th minute as freshman Mohammed Mouzone continued his torrid start to the season with another goal. He would assist on Charlie Hogg's 1st of the night in the 20th minute. The stunned crowd could not believe what they were seeing at that point as the Tigers had a 5 spot on the board in just over 20 minutes.
Both teams began working into their respective benches as the lead remained at 5-0 into the 2nd half. Charlie Hogg stayed on and kept scoring. He broke free and finished in the 57th minute for his 2nd of the night and a 6-0 lead. IU East got on the board at the 61:01 mark, but Hogg left no doubt on this night. He took a long pass from centerback Austin Pickerell and finished off his hat trick just 37 seconds after the Red Wolves goal. Mohammed Mouzone capped off the night with his 2nd goal in the 86th minute for the 8-1 final.
Georgetown made the most out of its chances on this night. The Tigers scored the 8 goals on 10 official shots on frame. Charlie Hogg finished the night with 3 goals and an assist. Mohammed Mouzone tallied 2 goals and an assist. Through 4 games, Mouzoune has already racked up an impressive 5 goals and 3 assists in spearheading this new, fast and aggressive Tiger offense.
The Tigers will look to keep the scoring burst rolling on Sunday afternoon as Lawrence Tech comes to Toyota Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
