Tigers unlucky in home loss
Unlucky bounces on a wet surface were the goal differential Sunday as Georgetown College men's soccer held its 2018 home opener. The Tigers (2-4) welcomed in University of Saint Francis for a rainy, overcast, soggy day. The Cougars (2-1) scored twice for the 2-0 win at Toyota Stadium.
In the 36th minute, St. Francis' Tito Cuellar took a blistering shot that bent toward the far post. GC's Jacob Roberts dove for the save as the ball clanged off the post. His back hand came swinging toward the ball at the same time and the two collided, knocking the ball backward into the net.
Roberts, who came up with eight saves – many of which were of the diving variety, had another tough break. The wet ball on a wet surface found its way through his hands, under his body, and into the net in the 63rd minute.
The most telling story of the day, though, might be the lack of offense for Georgetown. The home team managed nine shots, but only two on frame.
Defensively, the Tigers turned SFU away time and again, but could never get an attack rhythm down or consistent pressure on opposing goalie Braden Conn.
Conversely, St. Francis had 21 shots – 10 on frame. Alec Sanderson, who scored the second goal, had five shots, three on frame. Cuellar and Ethan Vigario each had four shots. Cuellar with three on frame and Vigario with two.
The Cougars managed to get eight corner kicks to Georgetown's three.
GC is back in action 7 pm Wednesday hosting Asbury.
