No. 17 Tigers Outlast No. 14 Generals in OT
MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The No. 17 Georgetown College men's basketball team (7-2) started the weekend off at the Centennial Bank Classic with a 94-87 overtime win over No. 14 LSU Alexandria (3-2) in Crisp Arena on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
From the jump, the Tigers' offense was clicking, sinking five of their first seven shots, to take an early 11-5 lead. The Generals fought back, though, and made it a one-possession game by the first media timeout. Georgetown played with the lead for much of the first half, falling behind by as much as four (26-22) with 7:31 to play after a Generals 3-pointer. Two key 3-pointers from Bubba Leavell boosted the Tigers back in front, though, as Georgetown commanded a 40-34 halftime lead.
LSU Alexandria opened the second on a 10-0 run to jump ahead 44-40 before Isaiah Mason's layup with 16:22 broke the scoring drought. Georgetown trailed 59-54 with just over nine minutes to play before an 11-0 run sparked a 65-59 lead and forced the Generals to a call timeout with just under six minutes to play. After Isaiah Mason scored six quick points with just 1:23 to play, Georgetown held a 75-68 lead. LSU Alexandria chipped away with a pair of fouls shots followed by a jumper to cut it to a single possession with 29 seconds to play. Darien Lewis missed a pair of foul shots, which opened the door for the Generals to tie the game with 21 seconds to go. Leavell missed the game-winning 3-pointer, which sent things to overtime, tied at 75-75.
Playing in overtime for the first time this season, the Tigers wasted little time establishing a lead. Rashad Bishop's jump shot at the 3:13 mark opened a five-point Georgetown lead. The five-point lead was enough, as the Tigers hit five of their six foul shots down the stretch on their way to the 94-87 victory.
