3-point barrage leads Tigers to 20th win
After shooting just 4-15 from beyond the arc in a road win against Cumberlands last Thursday, #3 Georgetown was determined not to let a similar performance happen for a 2nd straight road game. Playing at Campbellsville, the Tigers hit threes early and often en route to an 85-71 to improve to 20-1 on the season and keep pace atop the Mid-South Conference standings.
Tae Dozier got the three-point shooting going just 30 seconds into the night. After an exchange of baskets, Gavin Stevens hit the first of his 4 threes to give GC an early 8-3 lead. Darien Lewis followed with one at the 14:29 mark to give Georgetown an 11-8 lead. Moments later, Lewis was fouled on another three-pointer and sank all three free throws to double the advantage. Jaquias Franklin made his presence known with a 3 at the 12:43 mark that came on the heels of a Tae Dozier block. With 7:42 to go, Hunter McCutcheon connected from deep, followed by an Aden Nyekan lay-in as Georgetown took its largest lead at 28-18. After a Campbellsville bucket, Franklin nailed another three to push the lead to 11.
Georgetown got a steal from Andres Burney to set up once more. Aden Nyekan tried his luck and missed, but Jabrion Spikes grabbed the board to extend the possession. McCutcheon tried from deep and missed, but this time, Nyekan had an offensive rebounds. Franklin then loaded up and was off, but McCutcheon grabbed the 3rd offensive rebound of the possession and fed Franklin for a 3 that finally dropped to give the Tigers a 34-20 lead. Gavin Stevens and Darien Lewis each threes in the final 2 minutes as Georgetown shot 9-16 from beyond the arc to take a 44-32 lead to halftime.
Out of the break, the Tigers kept launching. It took them all of 11 seconds to add another 3 as Gavin Stevens knocked it down. With 16:54 to go, Dre Boyd hit 2 free throws for a 53-34 lead. Campbellsville fought back with an 11-2 run to get within 10 at 55-45 with just over 14 minutes to play. Gavin Stevens had the answer with another three to stem the tide. Dre Boyd followed with dunk and a rare three of his own with 11:31 to play to push the lead to 63-45. Boyd and Tae Dozier followed with dunks to grow the lead to 22. Hunter McCutcheon hit two more from deep as the half wound down as Georgetown cruised to the 14-point win.
In total, Georgetown shot 14-27 from 3-point range, while holding Campbellsville to just 7-24 from deep. Dre Boyd led the Tigers in scoring again with 15 points. Gavin Stevens tallied 14 in 20 minutes. Darien Lewis scored 13 and pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds. Jaquias Franklin shot 3-6 from deep en route to 13 points. Hunter McCutcheon was 3-4 from downtown for 9 points. Tae Dozier turned in another brilliant night on both ends. He finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks.
