Tigers cruise by Fisk for 9-0 start
After a slow start against Florida College on Friday night, Georgetown had no issues of a repeat performance on Saturday afternoon against Fisk University. The Tigers built a double-digit lead just 7 minutes in and never looked back in a 98-82 win to improve to 9-0 on the season.
Darien Lewis got the Tigers going with 2 straight threes in the first 90 seconds. Fisk did come back to take an 8-7 lead with 16:08 to go in the half. Jabrion Spikes followed with a 3 that triggered an 18-0 run, led by 3 straight threes from Jaquias Franklin. A Dre Boyd layup punctuated the run and gave the Tigers a 25-8 lead with 12:15 to go. After a Fisk bucket, Franklin hit another 3 for a 28-10 lead. Fisk chipped the lead down to 8 later in the half but was stopped there thanks to a 3 from Gavin Stevens that pushed the lead to 44-33 with 4 minutes left. From there, the teams would trade points until the Tigers took a 52-38 lead to the half. Georgetown shot 62% in the half, including 8-14 from beyond the arc. Jaquias Franklin led GC with 12 at the break, while Andres Burney was right behind with 11.
Fisk came out strong to start the 2nd half. A 9-2 run in the first 1:39 cut the lead down to 7 at 54-47. The Bulldogs got closer with 14:48 to go after a 3 cut the Georgetown lead to 63-57. While Fisk was trying to shoot its way back in with threes, Georgetown turned to its inside game for the answer. Andres Burney scored twice at the rim, followed by layups from Dre Boyd and Jabrion Spikes. Darien Lewis then hit a three, followed by 4 eventual free throws. Burney came back in with 2 jumpers. It all added up to a 19-0 run over a span of 5:27 to give Georgetown an 82-57 lead before Fisk got back on the board. Fisk never again got closer than the final 16-point margin.
Georgetown knocked down a season-high 13 threes in the game and shot 57% from behind the line. 4 Tigers knocked down multiple threes in the game to keep Fisk at bay. Andres Burney led the overall scoring attack with 21 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Dre Boyd and Darien Lewis played stellar all-around games in the win. Boyd finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Lewis ended with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Jaquias Franklin scored all 12 of his points in the 1st half. Jabrion Spikes was the final Tiger in double figures with 10.
The Tigers play once more before the Thanksgiving break. They take on the Bethel (IN) Pilots at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Tuesday night. Tip time is set for 5:30pm.
